How To Manage Occupation-Related Posture Problems
I have worked as an executive assistant for more than a year. My job entailed working in front of the computer for almost the entire day. Almost a year ago, I began to have regular bouts with headaches well as a persistent soreness throughout the small of the back. Unsure of its causes I had a few lab workups which all returned normal. I then went to see an eye doctor, in order to find out whether the headache is related to the error of refraction I was diagnosed with years prior. As she evaluated my visual acuity, the optometrist pointed out that I slouched in the clinic chair the whole time. She recommended that I visit a chiropractic physician to ascertain if the symptoms I mentioned are attributable to my less than ideal posture.
As it turned out, she was right. The chiropractic doctor explained to me that slouching makes the musculature of the back work harder to compensate for my faulty spinal alignment. This is the reason why I have a nagging back pain. The posture specialist discussed as well how my poor seating posture while working places unnecessary strain on the shoulder and the neck muscles which in turn cause my tension headache. He prescribed a list of workout routines as well as fitted me with a posture corrective brace
The posture correction brace is designed to support the back and promote proper spinal alignment while sitting or standing. There are several designs available each targeting a specific problem area. Mine was for the lower back. The doctor told me that posture corrective braces should fit snugly so that I won’t feel any discomfort. I was told it was possible to find some in medical supply companies.
He told me that wearing a posture correction brace isn’t enough. It should be coupled with posture improvement exercises as well. The workout program he recommended geared towards making my back, shoulder and core muscles stronger and it included exercises like back extensions, lateral pull downs and abdominal crunches. Moreover, he suggested that I try exercising on a Swiss ball.
The chiropractor also advised me to an ergonomic workstation and chair. I requested my boss for a swivel chair that had adequate back support and with adjustable height. Nowadays, those painful symptoms are gone and I can work more efficiently.
