Both the games of Omaha 8 and Omaha High-Low are the same, but however you find it, the game is peculiar in its split pot, i.e. the pot is divided between the player with the highest hand and the one with lowest. Should both the highest and lowest hands reside with one player, he gets the whole pot. This dual high and low winning hand form sets it apart from other variants and engenders some very different strategies as a player sets forth to enhance his betting odds to the highest level possible. Omaha calls for a single betting format and it is not a rarity for players to be actively seeking the highest or lowest or both hands along with all their opponents. Common to all poker types, the nuts (best hand) takes the pot.

If you are a newcomer to Omaha 8, it is a good idea to watch several games due to the complexity of strategy and not unlike other poker forms, betting in this game is a mosaic of aggression, bluffing and value betting. This combination is influenced by the dual pot and demands that the player gain an in-depth comprehension of the elements that go into the winners. The ideal means for beginning the study of Omaha 8 is with the rules.. One must study these in detail and retain them. Strategy is best learned by entering into a beginner game and building on it level by level. Do not get yourself into a high level pot limit game without keeping the thought that this high level game will also bring with it multiple raises. Venture into this type of game with plenty of liquid assets so you can compete for a decent amount of time.

The format of play in Omaha 8

Holdem and Omaha standard versions follow the same arrangement as Omaha 8 when it comes to declaring the highest hand. The low hand determining factors though are different The low hand in Omaha 8 must meet the following criteria:

The reason for its name of Omaha 8 is due to the fact that a player must play a card of eight or under as part of his hand. As the rules require that hole cards must be used, two of their cards must be lower than this value for the hand to be considered low.

In the event of no hands meeting such conditions for the low pot, the highest hand rakes in the entire pot similar to the normal Omaha rules. The Ace, which is low and the eight are the sole cards vying for the winning hand in Omaha 8. For the high hands, all cards qualify and a player can form his triumphant hand with a mix of high and low hands.

You will usually find Omaha with standard pot limit rules, though limit and no limit are not totally out of the picture and can be found at some tables. One thing common to all Omaha 8 games is the split pots at high and low levels. This feature demands an in-depth understanding of what winning hands can be made up of and how this effects betting strategy.

It should always be in your mind as a player that a hand of three or four of a kind renders it almost impossible to win either end of the pot due to the two hole card rule, which leaves the player holding a pair at best. The epitome of a winning hand will consist of ace-two suited as this duo can produce several different high hand combinations while also being the one lowest ranked low pot taker. The ultimate low hand is called a wheel and includes A-2-3-4-5. At the top of hand supremacy is the Royal flush put together with three community cards.

Poker is rich in aesthetics. The enormously popular game developed over the centuries into an exquisite form of intellectual art. It has accumulated not only distinctive rules, but long-standing traditions. A genuine poker player is there not merely to spend some time away from his work or family. A genuine poker player enters the establishment and sits down at the table with a keen sense of poker as profession and of the profession as a complex and noble tradition. The game is elevated from mere week-end pass time for the rich to an intense imaginative experience.

Every casino offers a variety of standard variations of the game of poker, but a casino after all exists as a profit-making enterprise, to which poker is just one of its many attractions. If you happen to be a connoisseur in any given field, whether as a collector of fine Edwardian furniture or an expert in viniculture, you will understand the devotion of the poker player’s penchant for a particular poker club.

The ambience of a well though out club is very involving – the dealers are friendly public relation experts who know when to get intimate with a client and when to back off, but always are personable. To raise the experience to even higher levels, envision rare Cuban cigar smoke twirling over velvet covered tables and hear the ice tinkling in the rare single malt scotch in its exquisite crystal glass.

It is not terribly difficult to start up a poker club. The first decision to make is whether you want a casual neighborhood hang out or a more formal establishment for the more expert players to frequent. If casual is the way you want to go, all is needed is a right-sized room, some poker tables and chairs, poker chips and several decks of cards.

For the more serious professional players, a location must be determined first, one where people will be encouraged to visit but quiet enough to prevent distraction. Most of your expert players will find a way to get to their destination, but none will go if the noise level throws off the aesthetic quality of the surroundings.

For the new poker club owner, since the game has an illustrious history, this aspect of it should be enhanced in the design. Something akin to historical tradition but with some modern touches to keep it from getting stuffy. Avoid any notion of a “theme” club…way to Disneyesque. Pay attention to factors like noise, color, and light pollution – all are distracting for the player whether amateur or professional. Everything should be slightly muted, exuberance is not what you are after.

No matter if you manage the club yourself or hire a professional to run it, you must be absolutely certain that your establishment is operated in an honest and responsible manner always and that the customer is king. Do not allow any disharmonious behavior in your club. Any such antics must be dealt with swiftly, fairly and quietly so as not to disturb others. The manager must be a devoted poker player himself, not just a business manager. The dealers need to be at the top of their profession, presentable, pleasant and welcoming to all newcomers.

Acquire furnishings from manufacturers who guarantee endurance and insurance. Add a space where players can relax between games, drink, smoke, and share experiences. Install air-conditioning and arrange a good bar with a professional bar tender: no genuine poker game can last for long without genuine smokes and drinks.

We have all seen players who will charge into the game playing every hand, even raising aggressively on the statistically worst possible hand, a 2-7 off suit. Alternatively we also know of players who sit quietly, folding each hand, until they finally raise with a high pocket pair. Having an understanding of the extremes of both loose and tight play can go a long way in developing a personal strategy of mixing it up so you do not become predictable at the table.

The ability to signal what you want is the key to an effective table image. By balancing your approach between a combination of aggression and selective loose play you can keep your opponents in the dark. Having the right cards, combined with a lucky streak is vital to all players, being able to use marginal cards and good tactical play to outsmart your opponents can move you from a average to a winning player in less time.

Poker is a mathematical game, and adjusting your table image can help skew the probability in your direction. According to David Sklansky, a leading poker player and poker theorist, the fundamental theorem of poker states that making your opponents play differently than they would if he or she could see your cards puts your hand in positive expected value territory. Therefore, mixing up slow play, bluffing and outright aggression can help improve your ability to make your opponents misread your hand.

Using Aggressive Play

When you wish to extract maximum value from a good hand or to appear strong when bluffing, aggression is a good tactic to utilize. Playing aggressively can put your opponent off guard giving you control of the action so you can gain the expected maximum value from any given hand. Different types of aggressive play enter into the game. There is subtle aggression – you check and raise the bets of your opponent, and there is passive aggressive play. This is where you allow your adversary to raise in the early stages of play then increase the stakes on the turn and rive when bets are doubled.

Carefully utilizing aggressive play at the table can make a big difference when it comes to maximizing your best hands and successfully bluffing when you sense your opponent is weak. Experienced players understand the subtle art of bluffing, and the importance of careful signaling.

When to Utilize Loose Play

We have all seen players who seem to approach the game with random and reckless betting. They will play any two cards or enter a pre-flop raise with suited connectors. However, if this strategy is carefully implemented it can return impressive results, either when you hit your straight or flush, or whish to set yourself up as a loose player in the eyes of the other players.

Mixing up your table image by playing loose can encourage more players to enter pots when you actually have a strong hand. Therefore, losing a bit on risky loose play early in the game can be a profitable semi-bluff when you finally get a full set of callers with pocket aces later on. Playing loose throughout the game can provide the necessary table image to help you keep your opponents off guard as you build up your chip stack even higher.

Discipline in every sport is an important factor to success on a regular basis. This holds true of poker as well. Even though most considerate it to be a game of chance, to be a money making pro at it, you must build on a foundation of the sportsmanlike attributes of learning, understanding and endless practice. This takes discipline. Natural ability is certainly a good part of it, but even the most blessed require a method, and a method is gotten by a serious and careful study of the game and how it is played by experts.

There is actually no real spontaneous talent. Think of Mozart, truly a talented child protage. One who practiced without end even as a small child, without which he would be just another composer/pianist of some merit. Mozart proves the old adage that talent is oft-practiced potential. No one learns discipline by someone else beating it into them. It must be self-imposed.

Amateurs play for the fun and excitement of risk against blind Chance. That is what keeps the business alive. Professional players leave Chance no chance: the pro knows what his basic chances are and takes advantage of every opponent’s slip, remembers repetitive patterns, and calculates the current odds. The serious player does not expect to have simpleminded fun: rather, his takes pleasure in efficiently emptying pockets as a profession. Chance only enters the professional’s world as one of the elements against which he matches his intelligence and skill. The idea is not to gamble half-blindly, but to pitch oneself against the strategies of another, and win.

Because of the many varieties of poker out there that are regularly played, you must learn them all. You must find the one that is best suited to your intuitions, likes and aptitudes. The one that engages you most fully and keeps you focused is the one to choose. Not having this self-imposed introspection, players find themselves plodding soddenly along in a game which is not turning on their best instincts. A professional will tell them to try another form of the game. They are probably amazed at what a talented performer they have become should they take the pros advice.

Know the difference between limit and no-limit poker, there is a big one. The player with discipline will not yield to temptation and will go for the game where he feels in control, steady and cool. In limit poker, players play with caution, remain calm, and skillfully and accurately obtain and remember information about the other players in order to overcome them with small moves. This disciplined player will play only the hands he deems to be winning, this may be only about 20% of the hands that are dealt.

A disciplined no-limit professional will evince the opposite of reserve, will be aggressive before the flop, and will play hands that to the limit expert would seem reckless stunts, always knowing, however, what precisely he is trying to achieve by every aggressive move.

Whether limit or no-limit, of at least the same importance as the right move, is to not get so carried away that you don’t refrain yourself from knowing when to fold. If the situation is hopeless, or you feel a lack of control, which is certainly not uncommon, as a disciplined player aware of your performance, you will not continue with a game bringing only frustration.

On better days, never trust chance to maintain your good fortune forever – learn to leave before you loose the edge. Good players learn to establish not only the limits of their losses, but also the limits of their gain during each session.

Most of would agree that common decency and politeness are the rule when involved in any social gathering, whether it be high tea or a game of poker. Some poker players forget this however, and choose to take their frustrations and pent up anxieties out on their opponents in the mistaken belief that it will aid their bluff. If this is you, stick to an online game that involves bots and not live players.

A lot about a person can be ascertained by his behavior, especially when involved with other players in a game of poker. The expert player comes off as focused and purposeful in his manner, even though he may be politely brisk. He is there for an honest, competitive game of quality poker. As for the student of the game, the more sincere, purposeful and focused he is, the better the chances that he is following the basic rules of etiquette.

Professionals are characterized both by mastery of the medium and impeccable manners. Good manners create a pleasant atmosphere which makes it easier to focus on winning. Experience and plain common sense dictate that you do not insult rookies, since they are a profitable source.

It may seem odd, but etiquette is also required in on line games when playing with live opponents. Above all, keep chat to a minimum. Every message you send or respond to may reveal unintended information. Every message you receive may mislead you. The more chat going on, the more distracting it becomes. Keep the chat to a minimum or do without it altogether.

Just as it is considered impolite to discuss your income with outsiders, it is equally so to discuss your level of mastery of the game or of any acquaintances’ game. So if you are indulging in a chatfest, you may be revealing way more than you intend.

If there is no way out, keep your chatting politely reserved and try to minimize it for everyone. Save the pithy gossip for the water cooler or chat room. Stay away from creating a negative atmosphere by your choice of words. You want a neutral environment to play your most winning game.

Attempting to anger your opponents into better play is a tactic that just doesn’t work and may backfire by showing the table your actual level of ability. Believe it or not, blatant rudeness is officially taboo in most online poker rooms.

Typing in UPPER CASE means you are speaking in upper key, i.e. shouting or expressing abnormally intense emotion. This has no place at the poker table. You do not want to betray any unbalanced emotion, such as frustration, greed, or anger. Play with grace under pressure. Even if you don’t like Hemingway, it will still lend your play at least a patina of cool intelligence and impressive nonchalance.

When these players sit down an play poker they generally don’t mind much if they loose a few bucks. This is the price of entertainment for some players. Other players play strictly for the money. This group of players is all business and have only one goal in mind. The reality of it is that most of play the game for some combination of reasons and money is on most of our minds to some extent or another.

If your main motivation at the poker table is money, you should be looking to improve your poker at all times and move up to bigger games. Bigger games are where the bigger money is at and if that is your motivation, you need to stay focused. With the higher stakes generally comes tougher competition. If you continue to evolve as a poker player you should grow as a player along with your bankroll so that you will be ready when you get to the bigger games. Unfortunately there are some traps for online poker players that often stunt the growth of a player and prevent them from ever making it to the big game.

An easy trap to fall into as an online player is what I refer to as “The MultiTable Trap”. This is when a low limit player continues to add more and more tables to his daily routine instead of focusing on moving up the ladder to the real prize. Low limit grinders may find that they can beat 1/2 limit holdem for 1 big bet or more per hundred hands. They start to think about playing 6 tables at once. How about 8, 10, or 12 tables at a time. Before long they have 4 monitors hooked up to their computer and they’re playing 16 tables at once. While this may be a decent income, I guarantee you’re not improving your poker. There is very little time to think when you play this many tables and zero time to learn anything. You are playing ABC poker against very poor opposition. Your bankroll will grow and you will have the money to move up in limits before too long assuming that you can maintain your winrate with that many tables. Unfortunately your skill level will not be ready and you will find yourself back in the kiddy pool trying to recoup your losses over and over.

A similar pit fall is what I refer to as “The Rakeback Trap”. This is when a player focuses on how he can earn the most rakeback rather than trying to get better. This often involves playing too many tables or playing short handed poker. Rakeback is a great way to pad your bankroll and anyone serious about online poker has to be taking advantage of it. Just make sure that you treat rakeback as what it is. Something extra. This trap is especially tempting when you get to the 5/10 games. You can easily make a decent living playing break even poker and collecting rakeback at these levels if you play a few thousand hands per day. Focus on getting better and rakeback will simply become and after thought to what can be made in the high stakes games.

If you play poker to make money, real money, than make sure that you keep your goal in mind and remember where that real money is being made. Its being made in the big games. Not by playing 16 tables of 1/2 limit hold’em with a 30% rakeback deal.

Poker Art is something that poker fans may enjoy collecting, and the industry is large enough. Anything from Super Mario chip art to stylish monochrome photographs with titles such as Gunslinger and No Chance, are being produced. With no nuance to entice the eye of a connoisseur it is primarily commercial products.

What the serious poker player – with an eye for the game’s complex aesthetics – may have a general interest in whenever he is not busy challenging a worthy rival is poker in art: but does good art exist which is significantly related to poker?

Worthwhile references to the game in art are rare, despite its immense popularity, and some admirers cherish them with the elite pride of the devotees of some wonderful esoteric practice. Mainly in modern compositions poker in music is featured, but for its expression in sound there does not seem to be much possibility. Video usually accompanies the more successful efforts, and these are restricted to MTV clips. Poker is referenced in many songs, but mostly a half-hearted solace is offered. Usually well meaning fans or poker pros that are not necessarily great with words or music are the composers of such songs.

Poker-inspired artwork in music that is the most significant that I am familiar with is The Card Party: Ballet in Three Deals which was first danced by Balanchine’s American Ballet Ensemble. It is one of the rarer curiosities poker admirers might want to see, with music by Stravinsky who also enjoyed poker as a pastime, it is more fanciful than accurate in representing the process of playing cards.

In painting form, the most obvious example is Cassius Coolidge’s series of Dogs Playing Poker. These were part of an order for’ commercially oriented paintings using anthropomorphized dogs. Nowadays, it is not even the original paintings which are iconic so much, as the general concept of cigar-smoking canines around a table in a dim-lit club.

Many works of art, in fact, tend to stylize poker and card games in general, blending them with fantastic themes. Alice in Wonderland would be the most obvious example. Alexander Pushkin’s The Queen of Spades is one of his most famous stories. It depicts a player who heard about a card trick from a friend and is desperate to learn it. The story begins as realism and culminates as a sort of card-game horror. An old woman guarding the secret is threatened by the man who desperate to learn the secret, threatens her with an unloaded pistol which unintentionally causes the woman to die from fear. Her corpse glares at him after opening its eyes at the funeral, then at home he is visited by her ghost which tells the secret. In the first game the man’s possessions are double. While playing another game the man knowingly holds an ace but appears to have played a queen causing him to lose everything. After being committed to an asylum in room seventeen he raves, “Three, seven, ace! Three, seven, queen. There is a BAFTA-nominated’49 fantasy horror adaptation of the story by Thorold Dickinson for the film buffs.

Poker tends to be criminally realistic in film (though not necessarily more accurate), from Cincinnati Kid to Rounders with Matt Damon and Edward Norton. Rounders has become a cult film precisely because of its decent depiction of the playing process and did moderate in the box office.

The concept of tilt is something most poker players are aware of, but the severity of the effect is only realized by a few. Taking a bad beat or two then losing your composure during a poker game is called tilt. When another player gets under your skin it can also happen. You tend to make plays you wouldn’t normally make which end up costing you money when on tilt. Often these plays cost you a lot of money. When playing live in a casino or card room, you only lose control at one table at a time then usually can regain your composure after just a few hands. Playing online on 6 to 8 tables a once is a different story.

Playing online affords many advantages like faster dealing and multi-tabling. This allows you to play ten or even twenty times the amount of hands as live play. This is a great way to make extra money when you’re playing your best poker, but when you’re on tilt it can cost you a small fortune. If it takes you ten minutes to calm down, you will generally tilt for three or four hands in a live game. If you’re playing online, you may well see sixty or more hands in a ten minute span. If you are tilting for sixty hands, chances are that you will make more mistakes and lose more money. When this happens, instead of gradually calming down, poker players tend to become more agitated, and lose more money. Losing more money will cause you to stay on tilt or become even worse and the cycle is hard to stop once it starts. So how do we identify such situations?

Some degree of tilt is probably experienced when a normally tight solid player begins playing fast and loose. The number of hands lost in a row is another thing to look for. You may not realize you’re on tilt, but if you are spewing chips, you better do something fast to calm down and stop the bleeding.

The easy answer is to just take a walk. Get up and take a 10 minute break and regain your focus. The problem is that if you’re playing 8 tables, and you stand up every time you lose a big hand, you’ll spend more time walking around than playing poker. Another, more realistic, answer would be to tighten up your game and pay extra attention to every play you make. I like to talk to myself to make sure that all of my plays make sense for a few minutes after losing a really nice pot. “Does it make sense to raise with Ace Four Suited under the gun?”. If the answer to my question is no, than I fold the hand. I also try to fold a few borderline hands that I may otherwise take a chance with. It sounds crazy talking to yourself, but if you try it you may be surprised at how many mistakes you save yourself from making.

The answer to tilt is different for everyone. The common solution is that you need to do whatever works to calm you down and get back on your A game. If you’re multi-tabling, you need to do it quick or your bankroll will take a serious hit.

Its easy to sit down at your computer and play online poker. You can play any time of the day from virtually anywhere in the world. The quickest way to get into a game is to join the waiting list and start playing at whatever table becomes available first. If this is what you’re doing, you’re probably costing yourself a fair bit of money.

The United States Constitution says that all men are created equal. I don’t know if that is true, but I can tell that the same is definitely NOT true of all poker games. There are good games and there are bad games, and playing only in the very good ones can have a huge impact on your bottom line. So how do we find these hidden gold mines?

One way is to look at table averages. This may mean finding games with a high number of people seeing the flop, very few preflop raises, or generally loose, passive play. Its easy to see table data if you play online and use any type of tracking software. Live games can be more difficult to gauge, but a close eye for an orbit or two should give you the information that you need. These loose passive games can be hard to find at times and can be nearly impossible to find at some limits. If you find yourself in this situation it may mean that you have to have a more specific approach to find the best games to play in. This is where your buddy / fishy lists and notes come into play.

When simple table averages fail to turn up outstanding tables for you to sit at, its may be time to head over to your buddy list. Finding and isolating one or two very weak players at a table can earn you an easy living. If you’re lucky enough to get position on these players you should probably stay at the table until they leave or go bust. The important thing to remember is to keep track of what kind of “fishy” your dealing with. Against a calling station you will play differently than if you had a weak tight player. Just having a weak player on your buddy list may not be enough. Keeping good notes on these weak players should save you some time in figuring out information that you should already know.

If table selection is not a part of your online poker career it’s probably time to rethink your approach. Even if you’re a winning poker player, there is no reason to not make more. Keeping good notes, tracking yourself and your opponents, keeping a buddy list, and seeking out high quality games can make a huge impact on your bottom line.
