Basic Words In Sign Language

If you’ve never studied sign language before, (and it’s not something that the majority schools teach), you will soon realize just how fast you can learn the basic words in sign language.

No, sign language is not a difficult language to learn, it is the ability to recall the sign actions that is the hard part.

As with learning techniques in general you will find out what techniques work best for you when matching up a sign action with the corresponding word.

Without a doubt, the most successful way I learnt, was simply by old fashion repetition and practice. Without regular practice you will quickly forget even the simple words.

I keep on top of what I’ve learnt by using flash cards, practicing with other people who are learning sign language and my online study program which provided the core knowledge.

Although there is lots of free help and advice online, I have found it much more beneficial to follow a structured program that builds upon your knowledge and understanding in a step by step fashion.

Many of us try to learn some of the commonly used words when we travel to another country on vacation. Sign language is no different. Other countries may have different versions of sign language, but it is the common words that you start with.

You begin with the common words such as days of the week, numbers, the time, greetings and compliments etc. and then move on to more intermediate words.

It is much easier to watch a person signing a new word or phrase than it is to try and learn it from a written description or a picture. Short educational videos are now much more common place and make learning easier.

There are now plenty of places on the internet where you will find such videos to learn sign language, like YouTube and MySpace.

If you want to learn a specific word, there are some very good online dictionaries that provide video or written descriptions of signed words. Most of these are for American Sign Language.

Learning and remembering these basic words will give you with a good platform to learning sign language. And because there is lots of online help and information, you have a great opportunity to learn this exciting new language.

Learning American Sign Language (ASL) is not difficult to learn, especially for native English speakers and should not take too long to reach a competent standard.

To understand and communicate by sign language sets you apart form so many people and is a skill that is not just admired and respected, but can bring so much relief and satisfaction to others.

You will be amazed at how many people you actually come in contact with who need to communicate by using sign language.

Even with just a very basic level of sign language, you will gain so much pleasure and satisfaction from being able to communicate.
