Choosing the Perfect Sea Fishing Rods: 5 Essential Tips

Shopping for sea fishing rods can seem daunting if you have little experience with sea fishing, or have only previously fished in fresh water.

Follow my simple pointers below and you’ll be on your way to catching bigger sea fish with the least effort.

Here are 5 essential things to consider while researching to buy sea fishing rods:

1. Think about where you’re going to be fishing.

Will you be fishing on the shore or along the sea-bed? It’s worth thinking about this carefully before you start looking for the right sea fishing rod.

The type of rod depends on the type of catch, which in turn depends on the setting.

One thing for sure is that you’ll need a heavier, stronger rod for sea fishing, because the fish are naturally heavier, larger and stronger than freshwater fish.

The type of fish you intend to catch should inform the decision about the type of rod you buy.

2. Consider the material your new rod will be made from.

Sea fishing rods are usually made out of either fiberglass or graphite.

Both these materials are resistant to the damaging effects of sea water. They are also durable and easy to handle.

Whilst graphite may not be pliable it has durability and is not too heavy to handle.

You’ll find that the length, width and general density of sea fishing rods made from graphite is different from other types of graphite rods.

Fiberglass is also an effective material for sea fishing rods. It allows for longer fishing time and greater flexibility.

The only compromise with fiberglass rods is that they generally don’t last as long as graphite. For me, that’s an acceptable compromise. My personal favorites are fiberglass rods.

3. Consider the tackle you’re going to use with your rod.

Like all fishing rods, sea fishing rods are useless without decent tackle. The best kind of tackle depends on the kind of rod you intend to use.

What tackle you use is decided very much by the locations you’ll be fishing in and consequently the types of fish you’ll be catching.

4. Technique is important.

Different fishing techniques are required in different fish habitats for catching different fish. Deep drop? Shallow drop? Bottom techniques?

It’s important to take the techniques you’ll be using into account before making a purchase.

5. Do your research.

The vast array of styles, brands, materials and accessories available for sea fishing rods is staggering.

It’s therefore important to make an informed choice.

There are many fantastic online fishing stores which you should spend time browsing. These will at the very least give you an idea of what’s available in the price range you’re looking for.

There are also numerous magazines and articles that can be helpful to you when making decision about which rod suits you.

The best help and advice you can get is from fishermen themselves. There’s no substitute for personal experience.

Make sure you’re informed and bear these tips in mind when making a choice.

Enjoy your research and enjoy fishing!
