Color Scheming: Creating the Look You Want
The color schemes in your home are the key to making it somewhere that you really love spending time, but that doesn’t mean that you need a monochrome color scheme with no character. These whimsical color schemes can help you turn a so-so house into a creative place to live and play.
Choosing Your Colors
The most important thing to remember when choosing your color scheme is that your personal preferences are going to be far more important than what anyone else has to say. If you prefer red and orange tones, then that should be a focal point for your colors. Remember to balance your color choices with either neutral or contrasting colors for a unique look that brings more into the home than one or two colors will.
You don’t have to repaint the walls if you don’t dig such a drastic renovating step. You can however, incorporate colors in other ways, such as through the decors, fabrics, artworks and furniture. A safer choice is to match the color scheme, such that if you have a light paint for the walls, then the furnishings will follow suit. For a bolder look, you can use contrasting shades but those that still look good together. Black and white is a classic, and mixing other colors with white is a safe option as well. But to match a yellow with a green, a red with a black or a lavender with a light blue, that is a risky color scheme but one that will surely pay off, especially if the rest of the room complements these colors.
Floor Decors
Colors can extend from the walls to the floors without having to install new flooring or re-carpeting. Even better, a sudden inspiration to change the color, design or the look of a room, can be easily done.
There are certain area rugs made for specific themes or motifs. For instance, bamboo rugs look best in a beach theme, wool rugs in classic and traditional home style, cotton in country-inspired homes. And these are only the kinds of rugs based on the materials used. Factor in the color and design and you have a wide assortment of area rugs to choose from to suit your theme. For example, light-colored rugs make a room look more spacious with an airy feel, while dark area rugs give off a sophisticated, almost formal look to a room. Bright hues for your rugs make a room cheerful and welcoming, and rich, deep shades can transform a space into a romantic nook.
Coordination
To tie two different colors together, area rugs and wall hangings are both excellent options. For example, if you are bringing a black and white color scheme together, then an area rug with white, black and gray can make the room look as if it were carefully planned. Other color schemes can be accentuated by grouping of objects in the same color. For example, white and apple green color schemes work best with ample amounts of white and touches of the bright green scattered throughout the room.
Using colors is not all about monochromatic design or all dark, all light. In fact, the rules of colors are so diverse that even the most unlikely colors can still look good with the right accessories. To save you the headache, just go with your preferences. You’ll never go wrong with your personal choice. You’ll be coming home to a place brimming with all your favorite hues.
