Eight Steps For Proper Pubic Lice Treatment
Public lice are typically sexually transmitted when one partner infects the other during intimate contact. It also can be acquired through contact with clothing and other material that an infected person has touched.
Unlike other sexually transmitted diseases, public lice, commonly referred to as the “crabs,” due to their appearance when viewed under a microscope, can be treated through either over-the-counter medications or ones that are prescribed by a doctor.
Prediculicide, which is a mixture of one percent permethrin or pyrethrin lice shampoo is prescribed very often for the management of crabs, i.e., public lice infection. They are easily available at the medical store locally and without any need of a doctor’s prescription. The use has to be done as per the direction of the manufacturer to get the optimum efficacy of the product. Lindane is a brand name of a product for the treatment of public lice, which can be obtained with a valid prescription of a doctor. This is prohibited for the use by pregnant mothers and children below two years of age.
When using either over-the-counter or prescribed lice medication, apply the following steps making sure never to get the solution in your eyes:
1. The affected part should be meticulously washed and dried with the help of a towel.
2. Make sure to thoroughly saturate the pubic hair area with the lice medication. Most over-the-counter medications require the solution to remain in contact with the infected area for 10 minutes. When using the prescription solution Lindane, it should only be left on for four minutes. Then rinse the area thoroughly with only water. Make sure to use a clean towel to dry.
3. Use your fingernails or some comb soaked in medicine for taking out the dead nits from the hair of the affected part.
4. When you are sure to have removed the nits, you can put on your garments.
5. You must also kill any lice and nits that may be attached to your clothing and bedding. Make sure when cleaning any machine washable items to include all that you have come in contact with three days prior to the treatment. All machine washed items should be cleaned at a high temperature of at least 130F. Make sure to dry all machine-washed material at the hottest setting for 20 minutes at least. Dry clean any clothing that is not machine washable.
6. It is vital to inform your partner about this so that the treatment for both is undertaken con- currently.
7. No sexual contact should be made within two weeks while the examination is on and till the final outcome is known.
8. If it is found that the crabs have not been eradicated, the treatment should be repeated as described above.
You may be lucky and find only a few nits on infected eyebrows and eyelashes that can be easily removed with your fingernails or a nit comb. However, if these areas are heavily infected, you’ll need to acquire a prescription issued ophthalmic-grade petroleum to treat the eyelids twice a day for two weeks. Do not use any over-the-counter petroleum jelly because this will likely irritate your eyes.
