How to Build an MMA Workout

Each MMA workout should typically be separated into five minute circuits with one minute breaks in between each circuit. This training regimen mirrors most actual MMA fights with their five minute rounds. The circuit can be completed three times, five times, or more to simulate what an actual fighter would feel.

It is important to warm up before each workout. This can involve exercises such as exercise bikes, skipping/jumping rope, running, jumping jacks, press ups, dips, and pull ups. Overall, warming up the muscles before a strenuous routine is the goal of a warm up.

It is very important to improve your cardio for mixed martial arts fights. Running and cycling are the most often used for this. Some fighters also use swimming as well since it is a total body workout and great for cardio. Circuit training can also be incorporated into a workout.

In addition to good cardio, it is important for a fighter to be physical strong. Using strength building exercises are a key to success. It is important that a fighter be physically strong so they can strike harder and impose their will upon an opponent. Strong fighters are able to overwhelm weaker fighters.

Developing good bag work skills is not only vital for strikers, but for all combatants. Bags can be used for throwing and training ground and pound skills as well. But bag work is most often used to develop good striking technique and to work on combinations.

Nothing beats fighting against an actual person. Sparring is a necessary component of fighting, especially striking. It is good to have an opponent that has a similar size and skill level to that of the person training. It is also important not to go full force into a training partner as injuries can derail training for anyone.

We’ve already mentioned that a bag is important for bag work. But you’ll need other equipment to build a successful MMA workout. Most gyms will have all of the equipment you would ever need.

Good nutrition is a cornerstone for a fighter. Although some are successful without solid nutrition habits, this is a rarity. Most fighters understand that their body is a machine and their nutrition is the fuel source. The better fuel they put in their body, the better results they will see.

The mental aspect of fighting is one that definitely cannot be overlooked. If a fighter can put together all of the physical parts to being a fighter, the mental game is still as tough if not more tough. Some of the best fighters in the world have been beaten due to a lack of mental fortitude or focus.

If you can put all of these different components into your MMA workout, or multiple MMA workouts, you can be successful. Whether you are doing it to become an elite fighter or just to get into shape is up to you. But this is a general overview of all the things one should think of when designing their MMA workout.
