Metal Roofs – How to Repair and Maintain Metal Roofs
If you have metal roofs then you’re lucky. Why is that? Many people use up a large amount of money for repairing their roofs mainly because they are not using metal roofs. This type of roof is practically the best one in terms of maintenance and repair. In fact, a little maintenance can help you stop leaks and other roof problems. So here’s what you do to repair and maintain your roof:
If your metal roofs are damaged, then the first thing to do is to repair it. You’ll need a few items in order to do this. The materials you need include roofing cement, all-purpose cleaners, wire brushes, pliers, sandpapers, solder, soldering iron or soldering gun and tin snips.
To repair your metal roofs, you first need to clean the broken region. Use the all-purpose cleaners for this task. Let it dry and then, clean the rubbles with wire brushes. Now, get a piece of metal made from the same material as your roof. Form a patch with it that is at least 2 inches larger than the broken region. Use the tin snips to slash the edges. Then, measure inch on all edges and fold it under. Use the sand paper to make the folded part shinier than the rest of the patch. Then, put flux on the folded part. Also, put flux on the broken region. Position the patch on the broken region and put a brick or any weight over it to prevent it from moving. Next, hold the solder to the seams and let it liquefy by using the soldering gun. The entire patch should be soldered in place or else the repair is useless. Get another piece of metal and make two new patches with it. Put roofing cement on the area with the hole and put one of the patches on it. Add roofing cement on it and place the other patch. For the finishing touches, add roofing cement on the patch.
Now that you have repaired your metal roofs, you are now safe from leaks and other roof problems. But be sure to check your roof every now and then. If you can, perform maintenance. To do this, get the following items: soldering gun or iron, solder, washers, screws, paint brushes, latex paints and roofing cement.
The first thing to do with maintenance is to fix holes and seams. The holes can be fixed by simply applying roofing cement on it. You should also put screws with washers on the raised areas of the roof. The lower areas of the roof are not an ideal place for screws because water can flow down on it and could result to rusting of the screws. Also, make sure that the same type of metal of the roof is used on the screw. Finally, coat the roof with paint to prevent rusts.
An easy repair and maintenance method is all you need to make your metal roofs better. With it, your home is protected from leaks for years.
