Morneau’s Back Injury Ends His Season
The Minnesota Twins’ dwindling playoff aspirations took another hit Tuesday when it was revealed that All-Star 1B Justin Morneau will be sidelined the rest of the season.
Morneau has been dealing with back pain for weeks, although a CT scan along with an MRI on Monday acknowledged that he has a crack in his lower back.
The condition doesn’t figure to need surgery. Physicians have informed Morneau to relax his back for the next three month|fall season.
Morneau injured himself on a diving slide into 1st base on Friday and hasn’t played since.
Before last week’s injury, the slugging 1st baseman had previously been playing with tenderness off and on for a fair amount of time. As a result, his performance has suffered greatly; Morneau was batting just .077 in September to descend his 2009 average to .274. Prior to this slump, he had been batting above the .300 figure. Having gotten only nine hits over a period of 22 games, it was apparent that something was amiss.
“You can play with the pain if you feel like you are helping the franchise or doing things to help your teammates out and win ballgames,” Morneau stated. “When you go out there and you don’t feel like you are helping anyone, that’s when you kind of take a step back and say, ‘All right, maybe I’m doing more damage than good.’ ”
In spite of his struggles lately, Morneau ends the ‘09 campaign with 30 home runs and one hundred RBIs. The home run total is higher than his ‘08 figure of 23.
Michael Cuddyer should become the primary 1st baseman in Morneau’s lack.
In spite of the injury, Morneau is still upbeat regarding the Twins’ chances the rest of the way.
“Hopefully I’ll watch the guys go on a run here and act as cheerleader and that is about it,” Morneau claimed.
