Oakland Raiders Improving
What can we say about the Oakland Raiders? After an amazing start to the decade (think back to the dominant days of Gannon, Rice, Brown, Garner, Woodson, and others), the Raiders simply haven’t been what they used to be. As a Jets fan myself, I can remember fearing the presence of the almighty Raiders year in and year out. Times have obviously changed.
The Raiders offense is one of the worst in the league and former number 1 pick JaMarcus Russell completion percentage is around 40%. In Russell’s defense, the Raiders don’t have Larry Fitzgerald or Reggie Wayne either – even so, that doesn’t excuse the very low completion percentage.
The Raiders need a variety of help at nearly ever position on their team. Sign’s of improving happened in week 1 when they took the San Diego Chargers to limit but failed to capitalize on critical moments in the game which could have sealed the victory.
Despite the loss, many were fairly impressed with the overall performance in the Raiders in the opening week.
Russell hasn’t exactly been great, but he’s been efficient enough to let the defense and the rest of the team do its job. If he can continue to improve, McFadden and Russell can be a dangerous combo.
The Raiders somehow almost beat the Chargers during the first game of the season. In front of the entire nation on Monday night football, they carried a lead into the 4th quarter and would have won if not for the heroics of Philip Rivers on the final drive. In week 2 though, the Oakland Raiders beat the Chiefs.
It’s no secret that the Chiefs aren’t seen as one of the better teams in the NFL, but they were still favored to defeat the Raiders in this game. The Raiders, however, played some efficient football (especially defensively against new Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel), and ended up with a–10 win.
I don’t know the last time the Raiders were 1-1 to start the season, but there have probably been more 0-2 starts than 1-1 starts in recent years. They have to be happy with the outcomes of the first two games.
