Overcoming Anxiety – It Can Be Done

If you suffer with anxiety or panic you are not alone. There are nearly 40 million adults in America that suffer with some sort of anxiety, including panic attacks, social phobias, post traumatic stress disorder and many more. This total is almost 20% of the total adult population – quite a staggering figure.

There are ways of overcoming anxiety and panic attacks by using what is known as cognitive therapy. This works by helping you to deal with both the psychological and physical way in which your body reacts when you come across one of your triggers.

So for example if paying a visit to the dentist causes a panic attack you will avoid going to the dentist. If meeting large groups of people causes panic attacks, you will find yourself avoiding situations where you meet lots of people.

Having anxiety or panic attacks can fast take over your life, so you need to find ways of overcoming anxiety so you can carry on with life.

One of the first things you need to realise, is that whatever the symptoms are, even if you feel like you are dying, you are not – the attack is just the way your body is dealing with your own fear (whether this is a real fear, or an imagined fear). Your body will immediately respond by constricting blood vessels in your extremities to protect your vital organs. Your body will also product more adrenaline.

Unfortunately when you have experienced a panic attack then the last thing you want to have is another one. So you take some precautionary measures which include avoiding the situations that caused the anxiety in the first place.

Anxiety is nearly always caused by the way we are thinking about the situation. So you need to understand the feelings and thoughts that have caused an attack to start. Then you can begin to challenge those thoughts. Although only a tine part of the therapy, this way of dealing with anxiety is known as cognitive therapy, and although not a cure that will happen overnight, it is a recognised way of overcoming anxiety that is proving itself to be very successful.

It is a system that definitely needs practice, but it’s definitely the best way of overcoming anxiety in the long term.
