As a strategic and tactical game to play paintball can be suitably termed as a physical and challenging sport. The players require to use tactics intelligently. A lot of paintball games invite audiences. Paintball can be a very exciting game to watch. Woods, arenas, and fields purposely carved out for playing “rec paintball” are used everyday.

Woodsball is a very logical name given to paintball when it is played in the woods. Large woodsball fields may be used for scenario games or war-type games. To minimize undergrowth some woodsball fields are groomed as such. Number of players can vary in playing woodsball at one time, it can be small or large. In comparison to paintball played in arenas and specially made rec fields this type of paintball is slower and strategic.

Two types of games namely speedball and xball are played in arenas. Arena paintball is played on smaller fields which noticeably are fenced with protective netting to safeguard the spectators from the stray paintballs. Manmade structures may also be a part of these fields sometimes, such as empty utility line spools, bunkers, and inflatable structures.

An empty field consisting only of inflatable obstacles and roofless bunkers that are distributed equally on each half of the field is used to play the speedball game. For the players this format is more competitive and for the spectators more exhilirating.

There are multiple rounds of center flag played until the clock runs out in the Xball which is a team game. A team which wins a round gets one point. The team with greater total points at the end of the clock running out is the winner team. Matches which are played for 50 minutes, split into two halves are Professional Xball matches whereas Amateur Xball games have shorter duration.

Generally played in fairly open areas with man made structures or bunkers providing cover Rec style paintball is more free form than other types. Number of players can vary extensively in rec style paintball, it can be small at times and during re-enactment games it can go into hundreds.

As per the requirement of paintball, teamwork is absolutely essential regardless of the type of game being played. When some team members are moving through the field other players will guard and some will give off cover shots when it is needed. Teamwork is thoroughly supported by communication.
