Recall of Nose Spray Products
The U.S Food and Drug Administration issued a warning on Zicams nasal spray products that contain zinc. Only after the warning did the maker of Zicams product issue a nose spray recall on three of their products. More than 130 cases have reported loss of smell of June 16, 2009.
The loss of smell can get worse over time and can possibly be permanent. With loss of smell, a person may not be able to detect hazardous smoke or gas and it may interfere with work performance if for example they are in the food industry.
Nose Spray Products Affected by Recall
Products of the nose spray recalls include three made by Zicam. They are the Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Cold Remedy Swabs, and Cold Remedy Swabs (Kids Size).
The nose spray products are supposed to be an over-the-counter remedy for the common cold. They are to be administered into the nose and they all contain zinc. The reason for the nose spray recall, according the FDA, the products are unsafe and ineffective; they do not provide proper warnings of the risk of loss of smell warnings. The products included in the nose spray recall were marketed illegally. In addition, Zicam pulled the three products after the FDA issued a nose spray recall on them.
