Surfing 101 : Something For Everyone
In this part of our guide to how to surf we look at what the sport is about and why you should try it.
The sport of surfing involves a surfboard (usually a polyurethane foam core with a fiberglass shell), and you on that board paddling into the surf, looking to catch a wave on its way to the shore.
It’s participated in by men, women and children of all ages, who are attracted by the fun and sense of freedom that it offers. The only requirements when learning how to surf are that you be fit and able to swim well, as by lacking in either of these you’ll be placing yourself at risk. A number of other sports present more danger, however, surfing does have a list of risks involved.
A good place to surf is along a shoreline with waves coming in at over a meter in height, and with the right weather, surfing can be an all-year long sport. It doesn’t cost much to start, as you only need to buy a surfboard. Popular surfing beaches typically offer surfboard and wetsuit rentals, if that’s the route you wish to go.
Surfing is a simple sport with basic principles, but they do take some learning and practicing time to understand. It’s quite possible to teach yourself to surf and you can learn a lot by observing and talking to other surfers, many of whom welcome the opportunity to share techniques and tips with newcomers. But taking lessons from an instructor is the fastest and safest way to be taught how to surf.
You should normally be able to stand up right on the surfboard while riding small waves within the first day or two after starting to surf. In addition to learning the proper way to use your surfboard, you will also need to have knowledge of currents, waves and the ocean. Being able to properly judge when it is or is not safe to surf, which wave is right for you, and how that wave will break are important parts of the learning process.
