Surprises in the Basketball World

We’re several games into the regular season, and times are exciting in the NBA. Sure, it’s early in the year and a lot can change, but there are a few trends that seem to have sparked the interest of many fans, wondering how things will play out through the course of the season.

Let’s take a look at some of the surprises we’ve seen thus far. We’ll look at pleasant surprises, in addition to some underachieving trends we’ve seen too.

The Phoenix Suns have been one of the best in the NBA so far, returning to their form of a few seasons ago. This is a really talented team that may very well be one of the better teams in the Western Conference all season.

The Suns are no longer with Shaquille O’Neal, and they may very well be better off for it. Steve Nash, Amare Stoudemire, Grant Hill, and the rest of the crew are playing some inspired basketball and they’re back to their fast paced game.

How about the Thunder down in Oklahoma City? Everyone knows that one day this team may eventually break out. After all, Kevin Durant is one of the best young talents in the league and he as a nice supporting cast.

They were one of the worst teams in the league last season, and they’ve really improved like it’s nobody’s business.

With wins over the Kings and the Pistons (this one was on the road), they got off to a 2-0 start. Nearly beating the Lakers after this was perhaps the team’s best achievement.

We’ve looked at two pleasant surprises so far, and there are naturally those that fall on the opposite end of the spectrum. The Cavs are one of these teams. With nothing short of a championship in their minds, they’ve sputtered so far, to say the least.

The team lost its first two games. Sure, many could say that the loss to the Celtics could happen on any given night. How about the loss to the Raptors though? This took many by surprise, as this was a game the team never would have lost last season. With each and every game mattering as far as home court advantage goes, Cleveland needs to fix itself in a hurry.
