The AFC Eastern Division houses many great football teams with the New York Jets being one of them. The Jets, currently, do not have a stadium they can call home as they are sharing a stadium, in Rutherford, New Jersey, with the New York Giants. However, the opening game of the 2010 season will be held in the anxiously awaited new stadium – the Meadowlands Stadium. The New York Jets began their career as the New York Titans and as chartered members of the AFL. The AFL had always been known as the weaker in comparison with the NFL; however, the formerly known Titans were about to change this. The team, at this time, played on Polo Grounds field, where many seats were left open as the team did not yet have a fan base.

In 1963, after much discussion, the team was bought by a couple of everyday businessmen. These men moved the team to Shea Stadium, and gave them their new name – the New York jets. It wasn’t until now that the Jets began to play as a team and acquire somewhat of a fan base.

It was not until the mid to late 60s that the team began to make a name for themselves as they began to make and break records. Actually, they were the very first AFL team ever to beat to an NFL team (NFL teams were always known to be favored). It was this win, over an NFL team, which won the Jets the championship title in the third Super Bowl.

Joe Namath aka “Broadway Joe” came to play for the Jets in the 60s; it was this addition to the team that go the attention of fans and the fan base began to grow. Namath was one of the greatest players in his time, so much so that he was the first quarterback ever to throw 4000-yards in only one season. In 1967, the same year of his throwing record, he ended the Jets season with an 8-5-1 record. Then, in 1969, he brought the Jets to the AFL Championship where they won the title.

It was at this juncture, in football history, that the AFL began to become a threat to the NFL. Namath, prior to their Super Bowl win, actually had the nerve to guarantee the win to their loving fans. It was this game, a 16-7 win over the Colts, that got the Jets their first Super Bowl win, and the beginning of what would prove to be a very successful football team.

In the years to come, the Jets led the fans into some disappointing seasons, nothing like the big win of 1969. They had lost Namath, due to knee injuries, but in 2008 acquired Brett Favre and could – again – begin breaking records and winning titles like those in the 60s. (The Jets had attempted to trade for Favre in ’91, but were too late.)

Favre led the team to many amazing wins and put their name back on the table. With this, ticket sales began – once again – to skyrocket. In 2008, the team was within inches of making it to the playoffs, so there is no doubt that the ’09 season will end with a few playoff games.
