When thinking of purchasing a chinchilla, you need to be sure of how to set a chinchilla cage up. The best thing to do is to duplicate the environment chinchillas are use to, this will help make your chinchilla happy and comfortable. In the wild chinchillas live in higher altitudes, and the climate is usually dry and cool. Chinchillas do better if they are kept in a 55 to 70 degree temperature.

Heat strokes are quite easy for these animals to have if they are not kept in temperatures lower than around 82 degrees. They should also be kept in low humidity, so their cage should be in a room with good ventilation and no dampness. You should consider putting their cage in a place with plenty of light but no direct sunlight.

It is nice to have your chinchilla where you can see it and be near it, but if you have a very active household you may want to put the cage somewhere a little quieter. If the chinchilla becomes stressed because of all the activity they will be very unhappy. If you do not have another room to move the cage to, you could simply cover the cage with a thin sheet.

The bigger the cage you buy for your chinchilla the better. Chinchillas are very active pets and they love to climb, they will want lots of room to climb and run. Condo cages are good cages to buy your chinchilla because they have multiple stories to climb and run on.

You should try to buy a cage made out of wire mesh. Stay away from glass aquariums and plastic cages because these do not have very good ventilation. Wooden cages are not good either because the chinchilla will chew holes in it over time. You could however buy a wooden house for the chinchilla to sleep in. Chinchillas prefer dark small places for sleeping it makes them feel safer. PVC pipe is wonderful for them to sleep and crawl in.

Keep your chinchilla cage clean if you want to avoid a stinking cage. Chinchillas do not have very much odor when they have clean cages. The size of the chinchilla cage and if there are multiple chinchillas will determine how often you need to clean the cage.

These animals are quite active and because of this they need toys to stay busy. A wheel is a great way to help them run off some energy and give them something to do. Chew toys are a must if you want to keep your chinchillas teeth straight and short. Chinchillas are great pets as long as you have the time to look after them properly.

When you are getting a chinchilla, the cage and its contents will be an important part of keeping your pet healthy and safe. A chinchilla can overheat very easily so it is important that the chinchilla cage not be in direct sunlight or a place that gets too warm.

Chinchillas like space. If the cage selected is tall and has a 24″ x 24″ floor, your pet will be comfortable. Remember that if you add toys and a wheel, you will need a larger floor space and more height. Your chinchilla cage needs to be made of wire. A chinchilla will nibble on everything and plastic, vinyl, and small parts are not healthy for this pet.

Including shelves and ladders in the cage will give it the exercise that is natural for them and they will like having a wooden box for a nest in the cage as well. If the floor and shelves are wire, place wood planks over them to protect the feet of your pet.

Using wood shavings or newspaper to line the cage will help to keep it clean and allow your pet to nest. Adding a wooden nesting box that has newspaper in it will also be a good idea. Chinchillas like to have places that they can hide when they want. The best shavings to use for your pet will be made of aspen.

Using glass water bottles with chew guards on them is an easy way to keep your chinchilla hydrated. The feeder should be a hopper style that hangs in the cage. If you are going to use a bowl for water and a bowl for food in the cage, they will need to be made of a heavy ceramic and be thoroughly cleaned every day.

In the wild, chinchillas chew on small rocks and stones to keep their teeth ground down. You will need to add a pumice block in the chinchilla cage to accomplish this for your pet. If their teeth get too long, it can be very uncomfortable and unhealthy for a chinchilla.

Find out why it’s especially important to have a large chinchilla cage if you have two chinchillas, and things to be aware of when making your chinchilla cage plans.
