Christmas is a time of year that draws strong reactions from a wide range of people. As much as it is a time for family and theoretically to be enjoyed, Christmas does have its opponents. Or, to be more accurate, there are people who are thoroughly displeased by the idea of a holiday which used to be about family togetherness and happiness being turned into a corporate festival which relies on rampant consumerism. Looking at the supermarkets which have Christmas related lines on their shelves from September onwards it is not hard to understand their points.

However it is inevitable that this kind of commercialism will take a grip on a holiday where gifts play a major part. Knowing that people will spend money to get the best gift for those who they love, the companies with something to sell will put a lot of their advertising budget into the Christmas period. The inevitable knock-on effect is that other companies will do the same to compete. Add this to an element of competition among families to get the “best” (read: most expensive) gifts, and you have a recipe for a commercial holiday.

Is it possible to have a Christmas holiday without being carried along on the waves of consumerism? Well, yes, of course it is. It is important to keep the message firm in your family, that Christmas is about people and not products. Gifts are wonderful, no doubt. But without the emotion behind them, they are still just things.

If you were to run a word association exercise where you say one word and your counterpart says an associated word, then the word “Christmas” could have a series of associated terms. One person will say “tree”, another will say “present”, and still others will say “decoration”. Some people, conscious of what they will be getting up to in the run-up to Christmas, will supply the word “shopping”, because Christmas makes a lot of people think about what they will be buying for others. Some people love it, others hate it. but if you do not want to be considered a “Scrooge”, then you will not be able to avoid Christmas shopping.

Christmas shopping is something which has many different approaches that can be applied to it. The fact is that many people leave their shopping to the final few weeks before the holiday, and when the things that they are looking for turn out to be in short supply they curse that course of action. Others do their shopping in advance, by a few months (and some even do it in the January sales), but this can demand a level of prescience that most of us do not have.

If you embark on a relationship in the weeks running up to Christmas, you will then be forced into coming up with a gift that will keep the relationship running smoothly. Should you use the Internet to buy it, knowing that it will be in stock but may not be delivered on time? Or should you brave the crowds and go into the stores to look for the right gift? Only you can decide.

Just putting up Christmas decorations is a great way to get into the holiday spirit. There are a ton if different types and styles of decorations to choose from, so you’re sure to be able to find something that will work for your home. If you’re feeling a bit more ambitious though, you may want to try making your own. There are plenty of quick and easy holiday decorations you can make with materials you likely have on hand already. This is a great way to get your whole family involved in decorating for the holiday and into the holiday spirit.

Pine Cone Christmas Tree One of the easiest Christmas decorations to make at home is a pine cone Christmas tree. The only materials you’ll need are glue, a Styrofoam cone, any decorations you’d like to put on your tree, and, of course, pine cones. Going out and gathering all the pine cones you’ll need is actually half the fun of this craft.

A hot glue gun is recommended, but not necessary. All you have to do is assemble your pine cones and begin gluing them to the Styrofoam cone. You’ll probably want to pick out the pine cone with the best shape to go on top. Attach this one first, and then begin gluing the rest of your pinecones onto the cone. Once you’ve covered the Styrofoam cone with pine cones, decorate your tree any way you’d like and display.

Nutty Christmas Creatures While you’re out gathering your pine cones, you may want to grab some acorns or chestnuts as well. That way, when you’re done with your trees, you can use these to make some cute little Christmas critters. Hickory nuts work well for this too, and you’ll need walnuts still in their shell to make the bodies of your critters. The only other supplies you should gather are glue, a wood file, and some scraps of fabric or other items to use for decorations. File the point off the top of the walnut and glue an acorn or other small nut onto the flattened area. Use paint or markers to create a face for your creatures and dress them with the scraps of cloth and other assorted decorations you have lying around.

Snowmen All you need for this craft project are a few different sizes of foam balls, some glue, and the decorations of your choice. Start by gluing three of the balls together with a large one on the bottom, a medium one in the middle, and a small one on top. All you have left to do is decorate your snowman and set him out for all to see. Because you can just stick your decorations into the Styrofoam too, you can use just about anything.

Cloves, for example, make great buttons. Really, the only limit with any of these crafts is your imagination. They’re not just a great way to decorate for the holidays either. These easy crafts are a great way for your whole family to get into the holiday spirit together. You’ll make some great decorations to be sure, but you’ll also create some lasting memories to cherish forever.

Christmas shopping is one of the most stressful, all consuming chores of the year and yet it seems to always sneak up on you. After 10 or 11 long months of peace and quiet, the malls fill up, the lights go up, and the season is upon us. But, Christmas doesn’t need to be a stressful, painful time this year. Instead, you can spend less money, get your shopping done earlier, and relax in those busy weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas for a change. Here are a few tips to help you get there.

Stop Going to the Stores
Shopping online is a great option for most items on your holiday gift lists. Buying toys, electronics, books, and novelty items online can save you time and money. A lot of great deals can be found online. This isn’t the best way to shop for everything on your list, but you can take care of a lot of holiday shopping this way.

Also, most online retailers offer free shipping on orders over a certain size. It’s not too hard to meet these minimums, especially if you’re buying for several people at once. If you’re buying gifts for people you’re not going to be seeing over the holidays, or who live far away, you can have their presents shipped directly to them. Often you can even have them gift wrapped before they’re shipped. Just make sure you place your orders early enough so that you don’t wind up paying extra for expedited shipping.

Get Christmas Lists Early
The earlier you know what those special people on your list want, the earlier you can go out and get it. It’s as simple as that. Getting the bulk of your holiday shopping done early will allow you to avoid those crazy holiday crowds, as well as significantly reducing your stress as the holidays get closer. That way, you can sit back and enjoy the holiday season instead of fighting the crowds at the malls.

Skip the Big Shopping Days
Sure there are good deals to be had on the traditional major holiday shopping days. The truth is though that there are often better deals available during one day sales and other holiday promotions put on by individual retailers. In fact, most of the major deals on Black Friday are reserved for a few big items.

Plus, fighting the crowds to save a few dollars often really isn’t worth it. If you’ve planned ahead and done a significant amount of your shopping online already, you can hit some one day sales later on in the holiday shopping season. You’ll likely wind up spending less money overall because you won’t be making rushed and impulsive purchases just to get one more name crossed off either.
If you plan carefully, skip the busy, painful days in the stores, and stop worrying about getting that one ideal gift that your kids want, you will not only have a much happier Christmas, but your family will be able to relax with you and enjoy it that much more.

There are those few people you know who will tell you exactly what they want for Christmas. Most friends and relatives on your list, however, will be less than helpful when it comes to divulging this type of information. But there is hope. You actually have all the tools you need to pick out a great gift for everyone on your list. You just need to have the right mindset as we approach this holiday shopping season.

Shop With Friends
You’ll get a lot of ideas for what to buy for friends or family members if you go shopping with them. Obviously you won’t be able to buy their gift while they’re with you, but if you pay attention, you’ll be able to go back and pick out the perfect gift for all of them. Plus, it’s always nice to have someone with you to help you pick out gifts for people you both know.

Pay Attention
Most people you spend any time with throughout the year will drop some good hints unintentionally, but you have to be paying attention. It can be hard to start thinking about the holidays in March or July. But if you can get in the habit of making a mental note whenever someone you know mentions a particular item of interest, you’ll be way ahead of the game when it comes to holiday shopping.

Take Notes
The only problem with trying to come up with ideas all throughout the year is that it’s really easy to forget them before it’s time to go holiday shopping. This problem is easily fixed though if you just take a moment to jot down gift ideas whenever you come up with them. You can even just make a list on your cell phone – really anyplace where you’ll have an easy time keeping track of them is good. That way, you’ll have your list intact when you’re ready to use it and can edit it as needed throughout the year.

Start Early
Another option is to start buying gifts whenever you get an idea for someone. There’s no rule that states you have to buy Christmas gifts only a certain number of weeks before Christmas. Buying gifts early will have the added benefit of spreading your holiday spending out over a longer period of time. This can make it much easier to absorb the added expense of buying all those gifts in a short amount of time.

The only potential problem with this approach is that some people may wind up going out and buying something for themselves that you’d already bought them but hadn’t given them yet. This problem is generally avoidable though if you pick out items that you know your friend or relative would never buy for themselves.

Buying early can also cause you to miss out on some new items that hit the stores just in time for the holiday shopping season, so you’ll have to take that into account too when evaluating your gift ideas. However you chose to go about it, holiday shopping isn’t nearly as hard as it seems. You just have to go about it the right way.

Regifting is a very hot topic. Do you regift? Maybe you have never heard the term before. To “regift” is to give a gift that was once given to you. So if your sister gives you a sweater that you don’t like (or doesn’t fit or already have) then you would give it to somebody else like a friend.

In today’s shaky economy, more people are considering regifting than ever before. But with regifting comes a certain etiquette and prethought about sending the gift along. For one thing, you certainly don’t want your friend to be wearing that very distinctive sweater and run into your sister – to have either of them realize what you’ve done. You also don’t want to get a reputation as someone who is very picky or so frugal that you regift all the time.

The most important rule of regifting is that it needs to be done thoughtfully. You need to only regift when an item is something that is brand new, in the box, with tags and is something that the person you are giving it to would actually want. Never regift a gift that has been sitting around for more than six months, getting dusty because it will look old and just like it has been sitting around in your closet – because it has!

When regifting you may also want to consider using a “degrees of separation” clause. So only regift when the person you are regifting to will not run into the person that originally gave you the gift. Thus sparing you and them some possible embarrassment. This is easily avoided when the item is very generic and popular – as most will assume you bought another one. But when an item is very distinctive – like a sweater with three snowmen on it wearing little hats and red mittens – your sister is going to notice when someone else wears it!

Many who regift admit that they have been caught regifting. You need to consider that this may happen. How would you or the gift recipient feel if it did? If you are giving something to your snooty sister-in-law, perhaps you might not regift. It could be hard to live down. Save regifting for relationships you are comfortable with. Simply remember rule #1: to regift thoughtfully.

Whenever you receive a Christmas card, or watch a television Christmas special, there is one thing which seems to unite them all – the presence of snow. This is something that has become as much a part of the Christmas message as anything. Perhaps it is because it looks so welcoming and bright and pure. Perhaps it is because it makes the scene immediately identifiable as a winter one, and therefore links it to Christmas. But there are many people in the English-speaking world who have never seen a White Christmas, and wonder when they will.

It depends, of course, where you live. Because it is in the Southern Hemisphere, Australia has Christmas in the middle of its climatic summer. As well as this, Australia is a temperate country anyway, so the chances of snow at Christmas are roughly equivalent to those of a 100-degree heatwave in New York in January. Even in the United Kingdom, which is known for its cold winters, snow tends to hold off until January for whatever reason. Though cold enough, the snow just doesn’t seem to have that sense of timing.

Nonetheless, whether you live somewhere that gets snow reliably just in the run-up to Christmas and then all the way through, or somewhere where it is unlikely to ever happen, the fact remains that, as a symbol of the day and the period, snow is something that is inextricably linked with Christmas. This holds true wherever you are, and is why we all know what Bing Crosby was singing about.

Christmas Is A Time To Reconnect

It is a fact of human life that, from time to time, we grow distant from those who we love. There are several reasons for this. Things happen in our life that take us to different places, and we cannot cover so much ground. Many of us have a number of friends and acquaintances and cannot be in contact with all of them at the same time. Christmas can be useful in repairing some of the damage that this does, and this is a major reason why it is seen as being a time of togetherness.

Whatever we may think at a given time, no friendship or relationship needs to be considered completely broken if one or both parts of it feel that there is a chance of reconnection. There may be a lot of hurt there, but Christmas allows a focus on things that we thought were lost. It is a time when many people feel that there is a chance for forgiveness, for apologies and acceptance. Whatever we feel may have been lost, we can focus on bringing back the good times.

Of course, Christmas is only here for a month, or a few weeks, and then we have to refocus on the world without Christmas in it. This is when the true test of what has been rebuilt comes, and if we are not truly committed to making it happen then it can still fall away again. But if you feel that you would like to reconnect with someone you had lost contact with, Christmas is the time to make it happen.

The Perils Of The Christmas Party

Although Christmas is a time of celebration, it can be a minefield for many people. The definition of a celebration is that people come together and enjoy a moment, and this happens most obviously at Christmas parties. More and more people are swearing off Christmas parties however, and this is due in no small part to the role played by alcohol. For those of us who like a drink, a party can be a chance to let our hair down, let our inhibitions drop and have a good time. But it needs to be remembered that sometimes inhibitions can save us from doing stupid things.

The fact is that alcohol taken in large enough quantities can make some people behave in ways that they would otherwise never dream of. It may be something pretty minor. The person who for the rest of the year is as quiet as a mouse may suddenly surprise everyone by singing karaoke – and being really good at it. They may still feel the following day that they have made an idiot of themselves and, while this is unfortunate, the fact remains that they may feel uncomfortable around people.

There are other, worse things that people do when drunk. Sometimes it can make a fairly placid person into someone who wants to fight the world – and this is a very destructive thing. Equally, it can make people who would usually be quite chaste into someone who will jump into bed with the first likely candidate. Coming back from this kind of indignity can be very hard indeed. It is OK to enjoy a drink, but it is important to know your limits.

Christmas Traditions: Not Essential, But Often Worthwhile

There is no right and no wrong way to celebrate Christmas. At least, where Christmas is concerned you do not have to stay with the traditional ways. After all, one of the major messages of Christmas is peace and goodwill. It would be absolutely wrong to start introducing rules as to what constitutes an acceptable form of revelry, above and beyond those already laid down by the law of the land. As long as you stick to the laws which exist, your Christmas can take any form you deem acceptable.

That said, there is a reason that the traditions have become traditional. When the first Christmas mince pies were produced, it is likely that the baker who cooked them had no idea just how much a part of Christmas they would become in many countries. People eat them, however, because they like them. Equally, it is not essential to have a tree in your house for the Christmas period – but people do, and have done for many years it does give a certain festive cachet to the whole occasion.

The main thing to keep in mind about the festive period is that people are supposed to enjoy themselves, and this should not be controlled by an insistence on maintaining traditions. The one tradition that should always be upheld at Christmas is that people are kind to one another and find a way to get along, even with those people they would ordinarily not speak to. As for the rest of it, people will find their own way.

Thinking Outside The Box (And Inside It Too)

When it comes to picking the ideal Christmas gift, there is no doubt that people put a lot of thought into how to make the festivities go just right for the person they are buying for. Christmas shopping can be very stressful – should you ask the person concerned what they want, or should you surprise them? Should you go for something classic or something quirky? If you make an educated guess as to what they’d like, what if you guessed wrongly? There are so many questions, and they have a habit of leading to other questions. It can be very tempting to just pick something out and hope for the best.

The fact of the matter is that if you are buying a gift for someone, you already know them fairly well – at least, we can assume so. This means that you know a lot about their likes and dislikes, and will probably have had a few of those conversations where a person reveals something about themselves that not a lot of people know.

Think back to the chats you have had with them, and try to think what stuck out about the conversation. They may have let slip something about an interest that they don’t talk about much. If you can make a gift idea out of that, they will be touched that you remembered and really value the gift.

If you are buying a Secret Santa gift, bear in mind that they won’t know who got them the gift. If it doesn’t quite hit the mark, then it hasn’t violated the law of Secret Santa, which is essentially a lottery anyway.

Christmas is cominghave you finished your shopping yet? You’re not alone if you’ve waited ’till the last minute. Lots of people wait, thinking they’ll get great deals and bargains. Others are just busy with family and work and don’t have time to shop. Whatever your reason, there is still plenty of time to shop for great Christmas gifts.

Begin by making a list of everyone you have to buy a Christmas gift for. This is very important and will help keep you from forgetting anyone. Write down family, friends, coworkers and any other gifts you give. Keep this list close by so you can refer to it often.

It used to be that you could only find great Christmas gifts one place; the mall! Today you can shop on the Internet and even at the grocery store. Gift cards for many major retailers can be bought at drugstores. You have many more options today. Take advantage of these options, and notice what is available to you in your daily life. What stores are near your workplace that you could get to easily after work or on your lunch hour? What stores are near your home?

Gift cards are an excellent choice for many people. In lots of cases people appreciate gift cards. Teens and seniors especially can be difficult to shop for. Teens’ tastes change so quickly it can be hard to know exactly what to get for them – and they even enjoy the independent experience of shopping for themselves. Seniors often have very specific tastes and don’t like things that stray from their exact desires. But gift cards are easy to mail and quick to buy. Consider gift cards as an ideal choice for many gifts.

Gourmet food is another great choice for many. Delivered fresh and available around the world – you can send it to anyone, anywhere. From fresh fruit, gourmet chocolates or specialty coffees or teas you have so many choices. This is an ideal choice for a lot of people on your list as a special treat during the holidays will be very welcome.

Kids count the days down until Christmas. It’s cute that kids get so excited about Christmas. But in some families, Christmas can cause a lot of frustration. When kids are constantly asking for toys – even if they’ve already requested a large number of toys – what is a parent to do? You need to tame the “Gimmie” monster.

Every kid’s personality is different. Some kids may simply be more materialistic than others. They may enjoy toys and objects more than other kids. Other kids may want to have the toys they see other kids have – as the result of peer pressure. So it is less that they actually want these toys and more their desire to fit in. Understanding your kid’s desire for the toys is important.

Teaching kids that Christmas is not simply about toys and getting more toys is important. It may take extra effort and work on the part of parents and families but it is worth it. Consider adding some wintertime activities such as Christmas crafts like making handmade ornaments or Christmas cards to your kid’s schedule. Once your kid starts to see that Christmas is not all about toys, this begins to change their perspective.

Kids can also learn that Christmas is about society. Teach kids that Christmas is about helping others in your community. Choose a charity in your community and help them in some way as a family. Serve a meal at a soup kitchen, bring pet food to the animal shelter, donate coats to the homeless or sing Christmas carols at the nursing home. There are many charities you can help.

Another suggestion to tame the “Gimmie” monster is to set some boundaries on what kids can ask for. They can ask for toys on a certain date and after that day the asking must stop. Kids can ask again for toys on their birthday.

When we look ahead to Christmas, it is often with a sense that we want this one to be the best yet. We plan everything out, we send, accept and reject invitations, and we shop. Then we prepare, we welcome and we say goodbye. Eventually we tidy, and then we look back. With a critical eye we might say that the season was a bit of a disappointment, but mostly we will fondly remember the best of it, and resolve to make sure that the next one lives up to it. This is the challenge that is involved in hosting a Christmas party, and it is a challenge that makes the best of many of us.

The best Christmas party obviously depends upon your target audience. In that target audience may be a bunch of adults, a majority of kids, or any other eclectic mix of different age groups. If it is a party for adults, then the requirements clearly will be somewhat different from a kids’ party – but the fact remains that a happy holiday party will involve something for everyone – and on a budget this can stretch the host to their limits.

The best approach is to consult with a number of people who will be coming to the party. You want to please the greatest number of people that you can, and whether this means buying more drinks than you had planned, hiring a caterer, or anything else, it helps to know what the prevailing feel is.

Surveying The Damage – The Post-Christmas Landscape

It is not difficult to see why some people question whether they should bother with Christmas in a given year. The magic of Christmas is undeniable for most of us, but it is a magic that works mostly on our perceptions, and does not effect the reality of things when we most need it to. The holiday season makes some demands on us, and although we are happy to meet them, they still need to be addressed when the time comes. Most of us worry about our wallet or our waistline more than anything.

The Christmas period does have a financial impact on almost all of us. Having spent the year being careful with money, making sure that we have enough to get through the week or the month, we arrive in mid-December and it seems like someone has dropped a nuclear bomb into our bank account. Money goes all over the place, and is hard to keep track of. When we sit back after the holiday season is over, we wonder how we are going to pay for everything.

Our waistline can also be a concern, because if there is one thing that sums up Christmas more than the gifts, it is the culinary indulgence. Large platefuls, second helpings and leftovers. Party food, party drink and precious little exercise mean that, all of a sudden, we have gained a few pounds. It is no wonder that most people’s New Year resolution is to go to the gym more. But the truth is that, with forward planning, we can make it all go a bit more smoothly. It just takes determination.

Is Christmas Just A Time For Children?

The older we get, the more Christmas can seem like a holiday which is simply designed to get the maximum amount of money out of our wallets, even as we enjoy the festivities. There will always be some people willing to make a cynical quick buck or two, and this does not help matters. However, the holiday period does certainly have its compensations, and many would say that these multiply when we have children. Children can add a lot to the Christmas experience, rejuvenating the holiday in the eyes of those of us who had felt like giving up the whole jamboree.

For children, Christmas is a time of wonder. It would be churlish to say that this is all because of the presents, but it would also be stretching the bounds of credibility to suggest that the idea of gifts did not play a major part in it. Children are quite materialistic – they will want good gifts, as they have to return to school after the holidays and join in the competition over who got what. But at the same time, the ideal message of Christmas – one of friendship and goodwill – is something that children can spread more thoroughly than anyone.

As adults, there are certain harsh realities which do not go away just because it is Christmas. However, there is a way in which the holiday can make us face these realities with a steely determination that they won’t get the best of us. It may be our children who get the most out of Christmas – but we can get a lot out of it too.

August, September, October, November”December! Finally, months that dont begin with the letter D seems so slow when youre in it dont you agree? Yes, I know December is the only D month (you catch on quickly) and truly, it is perhaps the most anticipated one of the year. If you want to bring on the holidays, what are you waiting for? Head on to the christmas tree shop and let the festivities begin.

We all know christmas trees are a common sight during the holidays. What will make your little tree stand out? Well, for one thing you can put your heart on its pine sleeves. String up family photos, trinkets and tokens of moments that mark special days in your lives. Wind it around each tier and watch laughing recollections of shared journeys commence. Lay on a lot of sparkle and glitter in the Xmas decorations that you use.

Do not limit your decorations to the living room”feel free to adorn the other rooms in your house with holiday cheer. Hang wreaths and garlands on stairwells and doorways. Mount miniature trees decked with treats and candy canes and place it in the other rooms. You will be the most popular aunt for the months to come.

Do not forget to leave your stockings by the chimney. If you have no fireplace to hang them on, put them by the wall or stairwell”prominently displayed so Santa wont have a hard time looking around for them. Tie pretty silk ribbons and flowers by the windows and lamps. Oh and before I forget, buy your mistletoes and keep them in a strategic spot by the doorway.

If you have some extra time in your hands, how about doing homemade Xmas decorations yourself? Its really not that hard. In fact, play some holiday tunes and youll even have fun while youre at it. The money you save is another upside too. Make little baskets filled with holiday goodies and weave sprays of mistletoes and lace on its handles. You can also attach bells and shiny balls in stockings, or miniature figurines or patterned fabric.

And of course we cant forget the front lawn right? This is a lot of space to go wild about. Dont hold back with your ideas, let them flow freely. Be colorful and over the top, its Christmas anyway. It doesnt have to be expensive; but you will need to have fun. Draw big images of stars or anything Christmas related, and spray paint it with glitter. Purchase those Styrofoam balls in many sizes and assemble them into party loving Snowmen in your yard.

Christmas is no excuse to be lax in taking safety precautions though. Be aware especially of anything electrical that you decide to use. Do not put liquids near electrical Xmas decorations. Do not keep the christmas lights blinking all night long. Ensure that the step ladders you use are safe and as much as you are able, decorate with a friend nearby for any emergencies.

And the last and most important ingredient of all”love. Put love in all your efforts and you will find Christmas living inside you all throughout the year. Have a beautiful home and lovely holidays ahead!
