One of the stranger sports stories of the past is that of Rick Ankiel. Ankiel became a vital cog in the starting rotation of the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals and as a lefthanded pitcher possessing both velocity (his fastball was in the 95-97 MPH range) and wicked breaking stuff his upside was unlimited. During the Cards run to the 2000 division title Ankiel allowed only 7.05 hits and struck out 9.98 strikeouts per nine innings. As the playoffs began, injuries had decimated the Cards starting rotation forcing Tony LaRussa to use Ankiel as the game 1 starter against the Atlanta Braves and their ace, Greg Maddux. Despite Ankiels youth, however, his stellar regular season performance gave the team cause for optimism. In the course of an inning, it all fell apart for Rick Ankiels career as a starting pitcher. In the third inning of game one, working with a 6-0 lead, Ankiel allowed 2 hits, 4 walks and 5 wild pitches before being pulled with two outs. Initially, he wrote it off as a bad outing until history quickly repeated itself in game 2 of the NLCS against the NY Mets. He threw only 20 pitches in that game, 5 of which went past catcher Eli Marrero. For the next several years he tried to fix the control problems that suddenly manifest themselves on baseballs biggest stage but was unable to do so. Compounding the frustration of Ankiel and his team was the fact that his control problems werent physical or mechanical, but strictly psychological.

Andrei Arlovski has experienced the opposite problem”after starting his career as the Belarusian wildman who devastated opponents with his aggressive, free swinging style and KO power he suddenly gained too *much* control. After trading victories with Tim Sylvia and two short, explosive and exciting bouts, a rubber match was scheduled for UFC 61 and during the fight disaster struck: Arlovski all of a sudden became a tentative and boring fighter. The five rounds looked like a boxing match, only without all of the punching as Sylvia and Arlovski tentatively exchanged jabs. This inevitably benefited Syliva with his freakish reach, and he won the bout by unanimous decision. The real losers were the fans, and Sylvia/Arlovski 3 is quick to be mentioned when talk turns toward the worst championship bouts in the history of MMA.

After a layoff of nearly 6th months, Arlovski returned to the octagon and scored a first round KO of overmatched Marcio Cruz. Another snoozefest ensued at UFC 70, where he decisioned Fabrico Werdum. Arlovskis contract with the UFC was up about this time and Zuffa management quickly made clear that they had no interest in resigning him.

During the past few years many questions have been raised about Arlovskis desire to continue his fighting career and several retirement rumors have made the rounds. The premise underpinning this talk goes like this: Arlovski is more interested in enjoying his newfound fame and wealth after his difficult youth and adolescence in Eastern Europe. Hes got more money than hes ever dreamed of and a nice life in his adopted hometown of Chicago. While it would be difficult to blame Arlovski for enjoying the life hes made for himself, this lack of hunger isnt a good mindset for a professional prizefighter.

Arlovski insists that hes anxious to continue his MMA career and has enlisted the services of one of boxings best trainers, Freddy Roach. Roach has been charged with trying to find a middle ground with Arlovski, somewhere between the wildly reckless style of his early career and the tentative, plodding style of his recent fights. Furthermore, Arlovski has also appeared to have trouble letting his hands go of late and if Roach cant fix these problems no one can. Theres even been talk of Arlovski pursuing a career as a heavyweight boxer which makes a good deal of sense. Arlovskis more tactical striking game would serve him well in the sweet science and the wide open heavyweight division means that he could quickly put himself in a position of a contender.

Baseball fans know that the Rick Ankiel saga has taken a positive turn of late. After giving up his pitching career in 2005, Ankiel transitioned to the outfield and has reached the major leagues *again* at his new position. Maybe this is the type of change that Arlovski needs and one that boxing would afford him. Despite a solid fundamental groundfighting base (Sambo, wrestling and BJJ) Arlovski has never shown much of a desire to take the action to the mat. It could also be the case that MMA has passed him by”dont forget that he entered the sport along with one dimensional fighters like Ricco Rodriguez, Wesley Cabbage Correira and Vladmir Matyushenko. While on paper Arlovski has a well rounded game, for all practical purposes hes a standup specialist. Unlike some of the other fighters that the rapidly changing sport has left behind, Arlovski has the youth and the skill set to transition into boxing where his standup skills would serve him well. It could be that Arlovski still has the heart and desire to fight, but needs to change sports to get back to a championship level of competition.

Usually when someone thinks of the fight clubs, the picture that instantly comes to their mind is of well maintained, powerful willed fighters, giving everything they can into the fights even at the toll of their own lives. Outside all of the laws and precautions, there are some real fight clubs meeting in secret locations where participants from all over gather to witness these grueling competitions.

Not all fight clubs are of this scary type and for some, they could come across fake, overrated men who thinks beating one another makes them rough fellows. Well the secret is that many of the suspicious fight clubs are simply playful ones, much like an entertainment show with a lot of actors.

There are indeed fight clubs formed by teenage boys, wanting to experience being macho and hard like they see in flicks. They may form a circle of fight groups, challenging each other in fights that aren’t too harmful and most are just frolicsome stuff. Being an affiliate of the fight club seems to make these fighters a feeling of toughness. Although there are those grown up adults with jobs and high fame battering one another competing for real prize money and popularity. Basically there are numerous of the kind of lower-level fight club that’s sort of a downgrade version of the real fight clubs.

When we hear of fight clubs, a lot of times we simply think about how hard women and men fight and giving everything that they have into the fights which could possibly end in a bloody affair. However one secret behind many of the fight clubs isn’t truly about toughness and integrity. Maybe the thought that fight club fighters are tough people, willing to do anything actually, makes the guys to join. Perhaps also that they like to hear other folks reactions and getting respect from it.

Well another reason why not all fight clubs are that fascinating and noteworthy is because they are employed as a method to direct and free frustrations in their life from work and to take it out on something else. Hammering one another to a pulp may not sound like a great impulse but yes, many of them use fight clubs to transfer their private life letdown into the fights. As such few find these fight clubs to be of good use while they are not genuine fighters.

Many people are turned away form studying martial arts merely because there’s so much to learn all at once. That is why it is better to break the steps into smaller chunks to study.Once easy chunks are recalled then these must be applied with repetition to be acquired with muscle memory. Even just repeating the movements over and over again in a session has its limitations. Research on a simple nervous system have shown that there is no increase to retention when any more than 10 repetitions of a task in a session are performed.

The best helpful system of repetition exercise is to spread the repetitions over a number of sessions. So essentially, the technique is to do only seven to ten repetitions of a primary strategy in a training session. Then depending on your schedule, carry out at least 9 repeat review sessions over a couple of days or weeks. The beginning repeat session could be close to the end of the session and the closer the review sessions are together the, the quicker optimal retention is obtained.

Some other problem is that many folks who have experienced in mixed martial arts fighting get bored when trying to train the number of repetitions in trying to get through them adequately. Mixing the repetitions in the forms of drills, fun competition, and games that engage the specific ability concerned is a useful method that may aid you to get by this problem and will increase your versatility as well. Bear in mind that this is for the learning of new drills.

In terms of achieving the highest level of both mixed martial arts fighting or Muay Thai Fighting, you would need to condition the variety of attributes needed such as speed, timing, flow, modification adjustment, corrections in balance, readiness for reaction to the competitor’s movement, and among other qualities. Getting your mixed martial arts fighting ability to this degree needs lots more vigorous repetitions.

Once a dependable level of fighting efficiency is gotten, then you could attempt to spar with a partner in a carefully managed conditions or do organized performance exercises in which your training partner gives moderate problems to address.

No one can expect for it to happen, but what if you suddenly get yourself in a fight with someone bigger in order to protect yourself or your loved one? If that ever happens, you wish you could have known a few self defense moves so you don’t end up in the emergency rooms waiting for surgeries. There are certain types of people that simply need to provoke you. Whether it’s for a good time or for fun, their aim is to provoke you into fighting.

It may be at first best to back off to assess the situation before doing any act on a whim. The situation, of course, differs when a person actually harms you by hitting you or by threatening you. This is an alarming position and you have got to become immediately alert. You should search for items around you that you could use to arm yourself. Having almost anything in your hands will inflict a bit of concern on your opponent and will make them more cautious. Any piece of furniture, dishware or tiny items like a safety pin can turn into your weapon. In defensive moves it is vital that you think quick. Your thinking needs to be quicker than your attacker so you can strike before he’ll even think about it. In case you are overwhelmed in the area, it’s a smart idea to seek for an escape path.

Essentially, you must try to analyze the issue as much as manageable. It’s much better to speak to your assailant prior to starting physical fight and to avoid any hurt done on either side. The majority of the time, talking will diffuse the situation as one may vent their negative emotions or be able to compromise. You should even apologize if you have committed a mistake. Usually even if your mistake is small, you can still apologize in order to avoid fighting.

Sometimes the attackers are so wrapped up in their world that they want to harm you. What if there’s no other ways to settle it then you’re forced into a situation to fight. It is good to learn self defense moves from different positions. This sort of training will make you more flexible and solid to various street fighting positions.

You could question the significance of marital arts in the street fighting brawls and how does it give you the advantage precisely. The marital art skills allow you the power where you learn and develop spontaneous self defense moves. The marital arts are designed in a way that you’re able to defend yourself entirely and competently against any oncoming assaulter.

When picking out for an trainer, you have to make sure that they just don’t tell you ideas and make you do drills. You’ve got to implement the part of discomfort and fearfulness in any eventual real time situations. Therefore when you study how to fight make sure that the course or the book you are reading covers various aspects of a real time fight.

Heres a word of advice to future opponents of Bobby Lashley”dont make fun of his background in professional wrestling. Mike Cook found that out the hard way in the co-main event of the Maximum Fighting Championships MFC 21: Hard Knocks event. After spending the run up to fight week making fun of Lashleys tenure in the WWE, Cook lasted a mere :24 seconds before being choked unconscious.

Perhaps Cook felt he was creating some sort of self doubt in the former WWE superstar by suggesting that he was out of his element in a real fight, but he turned it up a notch at the weigh in and in his ring entrance by donning a Mexican Lucha Libre mask. In prefight interviews, Cook had suggested that Lashley would soil himself once he entered the ring (though in not so erudite terms). That clearly incensed the massive 64 250 pound Lashley, who despite his inexperience in MMA is hardly the sort of individual prone to losing bowel control at the prospect of a fight.

Even after the opening bell rang, Cooks arrogant approach to the fight continued as he immediately clinched with his opponent as if he had no regard whatsoever for Lashleys strength. Lashley immediately locked in a guillotine choke and basically yanked Cook down to the mat by his head. Once on the canvas, Lashley cinched it in deeper as Cook flopped around”partially in an effort to escape, partially in an involuntary muscle reaction as he sunk into unconsciousness.

After the fight Lashley gave his opponent a hug and flashed his trademark megawatt smile as if to say I told you so. In his postfight interview, however, he did slip in a final verbal jab toward his vanquished opponent saying that he didnt come to play and that he is all business.

Despite the fact that mixed martial arts and professional wrestling have been interwoven from the beginning, the American Top Team trained Lashley has been singled out by less knowledgeable fans for his tenure in the WWE. Against his next opponent, Bob Sapp, hell be facing a foe that has also spent some time in the worked environment of professional wrestling. In addition to his legit fighting experience in K-1 and PRIDE, Sapp has worked for several Japanese pro wrestling organizations and briefly held the prestigious IWGP Championship. The IWGP title has been held by pro wrestling legends such as Keiji The Great Muta Mutoh, Antonio Inoki and Tatsumi Fujinami, as well as reigning UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

Even though Sapps days as a serious fighter are long past and he likely spends less time in the gym during a given year than Lashley does in a month, he does present an element of danger. Hes still got decent punching power, and his sheer bulk will be a challenge for Lashley who could give up as much as 100 pounds come fight night. Still, Sapps only victories in several years have been against overmatched and/or outsized opponents.

The last time that Georges St. Pierre defended his UFC welterweight title, it quickly turned into the low point of his career. Already facing a number of personal issues away from the cage, he looked sloppy and distracted as Matt Serra defeated him by brutal TKO. This time, things were different”before an enthusiastic and knowledgeable crowd at Minneapolis Target Center arena GSP brutalized Jon Fitch over five rounds to win an easy unanimous decision.

After a dominant takedown to open the fight, followed by a barrage of GSP punches it looked as if Fitch wouldnt make it out of the first round. He managed to survive, though generated little offense the rest of the way as the champion had his way with him both on the ground and in standup striking exchanges. Fitch landed enough counterpunches to open a cut near the champions eye, but never even came close to winning a round.

As the final horn sounded, GSP bowed down in front of Fitch in a nice, Muay Thai inspired show of respect. In yet another moment that is thankfully commonplace in fighting and all too rare in other sports, Fitch and GSP sat knee to knee in the center of the cage congratulating each other for over a minute as their respective cutmen worked on their wounds.

And theres very likely not another athlete like Brock Lesnar even within the ranks of fightsport competitors. In his 3rd professional MMA bout the amateur wrestling legend turned WWE champion displayed a brutally effective new fighting style along with stellar patience and cage control as he obliterated tough and highly experienced Heath Herring.

From that point forward, Herring was completely out of the fight though he repeatedly demonstrated his toughness by staying in the fight and not tapping out to strikes as had Min Soo Kim in Lesnars MMA debut. Unlike Lesnars gameplan against Frank Mir in his UFC debut”when he clearly wanted to overwhelm his opponent for a quick win”perhaps the most impressive element of his improvement as a fighter was his patience. There were a number of occasions where Lesnar could have tried and finished the fight by placing himself at greater risk, but took the conservative approach. The result is a fight style that is almost frightening, with Lesnar able to leverage his world class ground control skills”along with his downright indefensible takedowns”to keep his opponent under control while he imposes his will using his size and strength and does damage with his massive hands and knees.

Overall, Lesnars performance bordered on amazing”a serious case could be made that he won all three rounds by 10-8 margins, though all three judges scored the fight 30-26. He repeatedly took down and threw around the 64 250 Herring like he was a welterweight.

Lesnars win gives a much needed boost to the UFCs barren heavyweight division. Should Lesnar continue to develop and do such a good job of fighting within his abilities his potential in the sport is limitless.

Gina Carano put womens MMA on the map, but Cris Cyborg Santos may have become the sports first dominant female champion by virtue of her overwhelming TKO victory in the main event of Saturdays STRIKEFORCE event. Cyborg simply was too physically strong and her punches too powerful for Carano, who fought valiantly before succumbing to a barrage of ground and pound punches at the end of the first round.

Before a near capacity crowd at San Joses HP Pavilion, Carano and Cyborg made history as the first women to headline a major US mixed martial arts event. Cyborg entered the cage first to a mostly negative reaction, stopping along the way to shadow box and throw kicks on the entrance ramp.

Despite the fight being scheduled for five rounds of five minutes each, the women set a frantic pace from the opening horn. Cyborgs size and strength advantage was apparent from the outset, as she landed an immediate flurry of punches before taking Carano to the canvas. Carano landed in top position, but quickly found herself in trouble as Cyborg worked for a kneebar and then a heel hook. Carano was able to extricate herself, and get to her feet but Cyborg took her back and immediately took her down again.

Carano was able to land a couple of effective jabs on the ensuing standup exchange, but Cyborg caught a body kick attempt and quickly closed the distance again. Cyborg once again took her opponent to the mat and after an unsuccessful armbar attempt mounted Carano and began a brutal punching assault that eventually forced the stoppage at 4:59 of the first round.

Despite Cyborgs triumph the most dominating performance of the evening belonged to former DREAM middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi. In his first fight at 205, Mousasi destroyed STRIKEFORCE light heavyweight champion Renato Babalu Sobral via TKO at the 1:00 mark of the first round. Mousasis victory wasnt a shocking outcome, but the utter ease with which he handled a tough, experienced and well rounded opponent in Sobral was stunning and evoked comparisons to recently signed heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko.

Earlier in a card full of decisive finishes, Gilbert Melendez became STRIKEFORCE interim lightweight champion with a third round TKO victory over the double tough Mitsuhiro Ishida. Melendez will now face Josh Thompson to unify the belts once Thompson is medically cleared to resume fighting.
