Plasma, LCD, projector, CRT? The choice of display technologies can be overwhelming for the un- or under-informed. Which TV should you next choose?

Plasma, LCD, projector, CRT? The choice of display technologies can be overwhelming for the un- or under-informed. Which TV should you next choose?

CHOOSING LCD

Slim and desirable, LCD screens are the new belles of the TV Ball. But they’re not as perfect as you think…
Liquid Crystal Displays have been around for over 20 years, but have only recently become a reality in the TV market.
The reason for this is that their fundamental operation relies on crystals moving in a viscous liquid and, like wading in treacle, it’s a very slow process. Early generation LCD panels simply could not switch pixels on and off fast enough to cope with a moving video image, and consequently remained in clock displays and PC monitors that were predominantly used for near-static images.
Thankfully, as the technology has developed, the pixel-switching time has dropped dramatically and, in the very best models, causes very little motion blur on moving images. This has opened the floodgates for LCD TVs right up to over 50 inches. However, unlike plasmas, price is no indication of quality.

Hot or not?

LCD contrast ratio is generally poorer than any other TV technology as the backlight can leak through the “switched off” pixels. A potent backlight can lift the brightness figures, but colour is dependent on single block filtering, so the total range of colours and the colour saturation are also mediocre. The deep liquid crystal substrate means the picture integrity fades away as you move off axis, although the latest models claim a viewing angle up to 170 degrees. That said, manufacturer’s specification sheets can read like Tolkien-scale fiction at times, so getting a demonstration of an LCD TV before you buy is essential.
So why is LCD currently the must-have technology? Not only are LCD TVs a super slim flat panel, they are much lighter in weight than plasma models, as the LCD itself is made from plastic rather than glass. Screen resolutions are HD-friendly on larger screen models and each pixel has a much better defined edge definition than the glowing phosphor dots of plasma or CRT – creating a very sharp image. LCD TVs do not suffer screen burn-in from constantly displaying static images, are silent in operation and, from an energy-saving perspective, use little electricity.
But the biggest key to LCD TV’s rise has been falling prices. Each panel is cut out of a single large sheet of fully engineered LCD and each new manufacturing generation creates larger initial sheets. This reduces cost per unit and hence the street price.
LCD TV costs will continue to fall, the picture quality will continue to rise and, as features like digital tuners, memory card readers and wireless connectivity become mainstream, LCD TVs will dominate the 32 inch flat panel market.
As long as you make sure you are buying an HD-ready model and try before you buy, you can’t go wrong.

If people are considering purchasing an HDTV then they should really take the model’s contrast ratio into consideration. The contrast ratio along with screen resolution, have a major effect on the overall picture. A high contrast ratio is desired since these models produce fantastic colors that most accurately reflect “real world” conditions.

Contrast ratio can be defined as a unit of measurement of the ratio between the brightest (white) and darkest color (black) that the specific television can produce. Traditional CRT televisions, plasma, LCD and LED all produce different levels of the darkest blacks and brightest whites.

Unlike most tests, there is not a standard method for measuring the contrast ratio because each manufacturer has their own way of calculating it. As such, it can be difficult for consumers to compare different models with one another. On the other hand, ANSI (American National Standards Institute) developed a standard test using a checkerboard panel to measure both the white and black simultaneously, but the conditions of the room will play a role in the outcome.

A person can also measure contrast ratio in HDTV using what is called the “full on full off method” where the ratio between a pure black and pure white screen is measured. Although this test will produce a higher contrast ratio it is not a good representation of authentic viewing conditions.

Most people make the false assumption that contrast ratio plays a minimal role in the color quality of a television picture. However, an HDTV picture is made up of hundreds of thousands of tiny pixels and they are arranged to form a wide range of colors. The models with the best contrast ratios have the ability to precisely separate the black pixels from nearby lighter pixels. HDTV manufacturers are always looking for the latest technology to combat what is termed “light leakage”.

Plasma TV’s generally offer the highest contrast ratios when compared to other models such as LCD’s and LED’s. In fact, some plasma TV’s feature contrast ratios as high as 1,000,000 to 1. To compete with plasma LCD and LED manufacturers now feature contrast ratios that are comparable to plasma models.

It is important to remember that the contrast ratio does not affect how well motion is rendered or displayed. HDTV delivers a quality picture so it is important to select a television with a good contrast ratio and resolution. Moreover, one should not waste the features of HDTV by using an old television with a poor contrast.

If a person loves the experience of HDTV and HD movies then a television with a high contrast ratio is the model to buy. No matter what type of television, whether it is plasma, LCD or LED, the screen resolution should always be taken into consideration. In the end, one should factor in all of their wants and needs before purchasing a television.

HDTV online has only been available for a short period of time and people are already head over heels for it. The internet continues to grow day in and day out, there are millions people that use the internet for various reasons. Therefore many people believe that it was only a period of time until television became part of the internet as well.

HD stands for high definition. This term basically means that everything that you will encounter will be set at the highest resolution possible. HDTV online incorporates these high definition pictures and allows you the opportunity to enjoy them from your computer.

The overwhelming expense of cable and satellite television is inadvertently going through the roof. A lot of people are being forced to decide if they want their internet service or their cable service. The funny thing is people spend a lot more time on the internet then in front of their televisions, leaving the decision process simply aimless.

Therefore, many people see the fact that they can now enjoy television from their computers extremely awesome. You don’t have to spend a lot of money for an HD television set, and you can enjoy all of your favorite shows from your computers monitor. Many people have been able to cut down their monthly expenses immensely with the implementation of HDTV online.

People will always enjoy watching a little bit of television, therefore incorporating television with the internet was something that was bound to happen.

By navigating the internet you can find a plethora of sites that are actually offering this source of television for free. While, others are making you sign a contract with their company, in the same manner as you would if you were obtaining cable for your television. The main difference of course, if you can enjoy all of your favorite television shows right from your home computer.

However, you do need to be aware that there are some scam sites that claim that they are offering HDTV online and simply do not follow through with their promise.

It’s horrible, that HDTV online is brand new, and there are already scammers who are trying to take advantage of people that are interested in this new invention. Before you ever enter any of your personal information you need to ensure that site that you are signing up for it not a scam site.

Gather as much information as you can about the underlying website that states that it offers HDTV online. You can begin by reading through reviews about the company and investigating any claims that have been filed on the company.

Always proceed with immense caution when you enter a site that claims that they offer HDTV online. You want to ensure that you will not get scammed, no one has the money to shovel out for someone else to get rich.

HDTV online is making the internet look a lot more appealing to many people. It saves you an immense amount of money and you can still view your favorite shows for a fraction of the cost that you would pay for satellite or cable.

When buying a television, it is important to learn the difference between full High Definition, HD ready and analog sets with HD converters. Full HD is a term that refers only to sets designated as full HD LCD TV sets or full HD plasma sets.

by Marshall Denyer

When buying a television, it is important to learn the difference between full High Definition, HD ready and analog sets with HD converters. Full HD is a term that refers only to sets designated as full HD LCD TV sets or full HD plasma sets.

Full HD TV – The technical specifications for a full High Definition LCD TV must include a 1080p as its pixel count. The contrast ratio will be listed as 1920 by 1080p. This 1080p designation signals that a television set can fully and completely broadcast the highest level of high definition broadcasting without reducing it to a smaller pixel count. If you play a high definition DVD or blu-ray disk, a full HD LCD TV can claim the best possible LCD picture. In the same manner, if you check the technical specifications for a full High Definition plasma set, you will also find a pixel count of 1080p. The contrast ratio will be listed as 1920 by 1080p. Again, this is the only way to ensure a true high definition picture without loss of pixel count.

For blu-ray technology, which is also filmed in this 1080p high definition, these sets are perfectly compatible. These sets reproduce blu-ray disks exactly as they were filmed. Other sets cannot claim quite this high a quality.

HD Ready – HD ready capability exists in sets with a pixel rate of 728i or 1080i. Each set includes a built-in high definition tuner for displaying broadcasts with higher pixel ratings. LCDs and Plasmas have fixed-pixel displays that use pixels to display television images. If the number of pixels is 728, then it has 728 pixels per vertical inch. If the number is 1080, then it has 1080 pixels per vertical inch. Images increase in detail as the pixel number rises.

Set Sizes – LCDs dominate the market because they come in sets as small as 10 inches and increase in size to family home theater size. Full High Definition LCD TVs often include the 42 inch TV. Full HD LCD TV’s are considered ‘high end’ compared to their HD ready counterparts. Plasma set manufacturers sometimes offer a 42 inch TV, which may or may not be a full High Definition plasma set. However, plasmas are most often in giant sizes, such as 50 inches and 60 inches. They are primarily for home theater use. Full HD plasma sets are “high end” compared to similarly-sized HD ready plasma sets. Already generously large, the 42 inch TV is the smallest size where both plasma and LCDs are available.

HD Sets – High definition television is broadcast in widescreen, also known as the 16 inch by 9 inch ratio. Analog television was always broadcast in 4:3 ratio. Whether they are HD ready or full HD LCD TV sets, LCDs will all come with wider screens. For full HD plasma sets, these sets will be wider than analog sets, but of course HD ready plasmas are also wider. Width is not an indication of HD quality, simply of HD capability.

HD Converter – For analog television users, an High Definition converter is a must. Almost all analog signals have been or are being replaced by digital signals. Only an HD converter can make an HD broadcast into an analog signal. Many users report that an HD converter has improved their analog picture considerably. Still, this is not a full HD picture as defined by manufacturing standards.

HD Online – Many television shows are now offer HD broadcasting online. This may or may not be full HD internet by manufacturing standards. After all, your computer also has a tuner that will simply convert any 1080p HD online internet signals into a lower pixel rate as needed.
