Building a chicken coop can be a very rewarding experience as the healthy chickens you raise will produce fresh eggs all year round. However, this can also be a daunting task as a single mistake can result in a mediocre coop or worse, unhealthy chickens.

Building a chicken coop is easy and inexpensive. You can build your own backyard chicken coop using common materials and household tools. A chicken coop is more than just a small little building to house chickens in. Build a house-like structure sized according to the number of birds you’d like. Make sure there’s compartments for the hens to lay in, and a separate spot for a rooster or two. They troughs for feed and water, and a catch-all tray beneath for droppings.

Be sure to build your chicken coop in an area that faces the sun which will help warm and dry the soil and coop itself after it rains. Building an overhanging roof can also help prevent rainwater from getting inside your coop and can save you the trouble of running outside in the rain to close the shutters. Building the chicken coop on a high yet well drained area with ensure the least amount of dampness of the coop.

Choose a plan that fits your image of the ideal chicken coop. Once you have your plan, it’s time to gather your materials. Choosing a breed will depend on the kind of chicken that you want to raise. There are chickens that seem healthy but their egg-laying capacity is frail while other chickens give out lots of eggs every day.

Chickens don’t require a lot of space so you don’t have to build a huge house if you plan to have 5-6 hens. Chicken coops can be built in one or two days. Chicken coops can be built in assorted sizes, depending on what your needs will be.

Starting a chicken coop is very easy provided you have free chicken coop blueprints in your possession and if you do not have the blueprints, then you can obtain the same if you go after the links given here. Start with the foundation. Make sure that it is strong enough to weather potential harmful forces. Starting it early, you can have your coop finished in a day. When you already have your coop built, do not put your chickens in it yet for at least 72 hours because the silicone you used for curing will still give off its fumes for many hours and chemical fumes are not good for poultry animals.

The most important thing to remember when starting a chicken coop construction project is the prior planning. You can save money and hours of time by planning what kind of chickens you intend to raise, and how many chickens you intend to keep in your coop.

Keep in mind that the whole point of the coop is to give your chickens a place to live. So don’t skimp on the planning stage or try to cut costs with cheaper materials. A well-constructed chicken coop is key to having healthy happy chickens who will lay you lots of delicious eggs.

A few top tips for chicken coop construction:

* At least 3-4 square feet per chicken should avoid overcrowding. Enough space inside the coop is very important for your chickens, otherwise you may harm them.

*Likewise, 8-10 square feet per chicken is a good idea for a chicken run. You will want to make sure your chickens have enough room outside their home.

* You will need to get in both to collect any eggs your chickens may lay and to clean out the coop on a regular basis. So make sure you include some way for you to get into the coop yourself.

* Make sure your coop construction involves some sort of wire so predators can’t get in.

Aside from these practical concerns, you’re free to construct your coop from any materials you wish. Design your coop in any way you please, and construct it from any materials you wish. Chickens are fairly easy to please, so much of what you decide to do with your coop will be for your own personal convenience. This is why building the coop tall enough for you to easily get in will be a help to you.

Just make sure that any materials you use in your chicken coop construction will stand the test of time, and that you also take into account your local climate. Those in warmer year-round climates may be able to use wire doors or walls, but if you live somewhere that’s cold and wet for part of the year, you want to make sure that you use solid walls and possibly even some insulation to stop your chickens from stressing when it’s cold.

Building the coop off the ground is also an excellent idea, as it will not only stop water from flooding the floor of your coop, but it will keep out snakes and weasels. To allow your chickens easy access, you can build a chicken door off the ground with a ramp leading up to it.

Once you’ve planned out everything to a full extent, then you can get started on constructing your coop. Don’t skimp on the materials, because the better quality ones you use, the more sturdy your coop will be. At the same time, don’t be afraid to re-use others’ discards. Local recycling centers can be great places to find cheap quality construction materials.

If you’ve planned out your chicken coop construction before you began, then the actual construction process should be fairly easy and fun. This is why having a good design is so important.

Building a chicken coop is not only a great hobby but it is also an invaluable skill that will serve you for years to come. Learning to raise healthy chickens will provide you with fresh organic eggs on a daily basis and you can even use your newfound skills to make money by building coops for other people as well. One of the most important elements when getting started for the first time with a coop is to always have the proper building plans.

The most important factor to think about as you search for chicken coop plans is how many chickens you are planning to keep. If you’re going to be housing six or more chickens, you are not going to be able to effectively keep them in a small sized chicken coop.Bumping it up to a medium or potentially even large sized coop will really work to your benefit and ensure they are laying their eggs correctly.

More and more people are starting to turn towards using mobile chicken coops rather than building larger ones that are stationed in one place. There are many benefits to using a mobile chicken coop, so going this route does become appealing to many individuals. There are some things you need to know first though before going ahead with mobile chicken coops because if you don’t, you may find that this particular variation wasnt exactly the best choice for you.

One of the big benefit to a mobile chicken coop is the fact that its cheaper to build. As these coops are generally smaller you can often use materials that you already have around the house. If not, theres a good chance that a neighbor will have some of the stuff you need, further making it easy to build a cheap chicken coop if necessary.

One of the most important step that we are covering when you want to know how to build a chicken coop is that your chicken feeders and waterers should be placed so your flock can have easy access to them. However, you should also be careful where you place them because chickens like to make a mess due to their chicken scratching instincts. You don’t want to have feed all over your coop’s floor, so in order to avoid this, you should place the feeders at the height of your chicken’s back. This way, they have to stretch their necks to get to the feed, but wont be able to reach the feeders with their feet. The same goes for the waterers. Just make sure that you keep the feeders filled with fresh water throughout the day.

Feeding your chickens can turn into quite a time intensive venture if you don’t plan your feeding set-up correctly. The total number of chickens you house will also play a critical role in how long it takes to feed them each day and how many feeders you should be putting into the chicken house, so find a chicken coop guide that discusses this.
