Even a veteran farmer may get confused by the types of organic fertilizer and chemical fertilizer available in the marketplace these days. Some farmers may also get tempted to simply buy commercial fertilizers rather than go through the trouble of making their own.

Take a look at the pros and cons of making use of an organic fertilizer and a chemical fertilizer before you determine which fertilizer brand to purchase.

An organic fertilizer can improve the soil quality by enhancing the setting for useful microorganisms and fauna to develop.

Naturally occurring microbes convert organic substance to minerals plants can quickly use. The earthworms around the crops loosen the soil for better root development. Organic fertilizer use will increase the population of these beneficial soil organisms and will benefit your garden in the long run.

You can maintain nutritional stability in the soil by applying organic fertilizers that will not upset the balance. The effects of these fertilizers are not only for the present crop but also for future planting. Organic matter is incorporated in the soil and remains available to crop roots.

Organic fertilizers are easy on the soil and on the crops, but we have to acknowledge that buying these from suppliers is difficult. Some of these fertilizers are not sold commercially in several localities. You either have to import them from another state, make your own or purchase them at a higher price in comparison to commercial fertilizers.

How can organic fertilizers contend with the fast-release mixtures out there? This slow release effect is a common reason why some farmers choose the chemical fertilizers.

Although there’s a type of organic fertilizer that shows the same fast release action, most of the organic fertilizers are supplied during the soil preparation process to make sure they’re correctly decayed when planting starts.

While chemical fertilizers can be harmful to the soil in the long run, most farmers would rather take the risk and use a formulation that has a specific ratio of the minerals their plants need. Chemical fertilizers are being vended in shops and retail outlets so they are also more accessible to farmers.

Our lawns and gardens are craving something natural to help them thrive, the way nature intended. Fish emulsion has been a prime organic fertilizer used by our ancestors for centuries. I’m uncertain as to how anyone ever thought that synthetic fertilizers would benefit our environment, but someone did. Hands down, though, organic fertilizer out shines chemical fertilizers every time.

A little known Gulf fish called the Menhaden is used for its oils and the byproducts make a great fertilizer. And how appropriate is it that Menhaden, loosely translated, means “that which manures”, since manure is an excellent fertilizer as well.

A much desired quality of fish emulsion as organic fertilizer is that it offers instant gratification. One misconception many people have is that all organic fertilizers don’t act fast enough. True, some organic fertilizers are slow acting but not fish emulsion. Your plants benefit almost immediately after its application. Some other organic fertilizers leave you waiting. Often their ingredients need some time to decompose and release their nutrients. You have to be careful to store fish emulsion at room temperature so that it doesn’t degrade before you want it to as it will in excessive heat.

Seedlings especially benefit from fish emulsion as organic fertilizer because it is so fast acting and transplants need the extra attention so they aren’t harmed too badly from transplanting. Fish emulsion applied to roots of plants ready to go into the ground helps the plant?s roots cling to its nutrient rich soil, aiding in transplanting by reducing shock to the plant.

When using a chemical fertilizer you run the risk of burning your plants and your lawn. Organic fertilizer doesn’t pose this risk, so you don’t have to worry about ugly brown spots in your grass, or plants withering away from burning chemicals.

Fish emulsion does have a strong offensive odor, so when handling you might consider rubber gloves and clothes fit for fish smell in case of any splashes. The stench does dissipate with a little time so don’t worry, you won’t have a fishy lawn and garden for any longer than what’s tolerable.

The Menhaden fish is the best fish to use for organic fertilizer. They’re too bony to eat, but they feed on mineral rich plankton making them a treat for the lawn and garden, super rich in nutrients.

Fish emulsion has been used as an organic fertilizer for so long that no one can legitimately debate whether or not it works. Millions of lawns and gardens are well serviced by fish emulsion, especially younger plants. The rewards justify the stench, so get over it. This too shall pass. Your vegetation will thrive like never before when using fish emulsion as your primary organic fertilizer on your lawn and garden.

Have you started to become concerned that you are hurting the environment while taking care of your lawn? Many people have, so luckily you are not the only one. Frankly, if everyone would take a moment to think of the environmental impact they are creating just to have a green lawn, we all would be in a much better position in terms of the world’s health today. So, how can you make a difference AND have a green lawn at the same time?

The first step to a great lawn is that you remember one key point: when it comes to lawn care, an organic lawn is generally much better than a chemically treated lawn. Yes, you can have a wonderful green lawn without having to use all those chemical products. Will this be easy? No, but nothing worthwhile is easy. However, it may not be as hard as you think, as the long-term benefits of an organic lawn will create less work in the future. So, yes, you can have an organic lawn, keep it green, and not have to work as long as your neighbor does!

So, what do you need to do? First, you need to concentrate on your soil. If you have planted your grass on top of concrete, then of course the grass will not grow. Of course, you didn’t plant your grass on concrete (at least I sincerely hope not), but you may have planted it on poor soil that does not have any nutrients.

If this is the case, then you need to head to your local gardener/lawn care guru and ask for some tips on what you can do. What you can do will vary by location/region a little bit, so I won’t try to give you all kinds of tips that may not be right for you. However, there are some things that everyone can do to improve the quality of their soil.

Improving your soil will do amazing things for your lawn. So, what is the best tip I have for doing this? Use organic fertilizer instead of the man-made chemical kind. Why? There are several reasons. Using organic fertilizer will do amazing things for your root structure by improving the amount of water and air your soil can retain and allow to flow to the roots. Basically, organic products allow and encourage bacteria and fungi to grow in the soil (like they should, don’t worry ). This in turn improves the soils structure, helping it to retain water more efficiently and allowing air to flow better to the roots. This in turn will help your grass get more nutrients from the roots and stay green longer with less water and care!

Organic fertilizers may not have as much nitrogen, phosphorus, or potash as man made chemicals, but that does not mean it is not effective at keeping your lawn green and developing the soil. Will you see immediate results using an organic fertilizer like you will if you have one of those spray companies come and spray your lawn? No, but what you are doing will actually last, while the company’s spray will act more like makeup on someone’s face – it looks good while its on, but comes off very fast and doesn’t last that long.

The first thing you need to do to have a green, health lawn and environment is to realize that you can have a great lawn by using organic products instead of chemicals created by some scientist/corporation. And yes, your kids will even be able to play on it! However, please note – this will require some work. You will either have to do this yourself or find someone or some company to do it for you (and honestly, most companies will not take care of a lawn organically). However, in the longer run, you will be very pleased with the results.

The first thing you need to work on in order to have a green lawn is not the grass-you need to work on the soil first and foremost. If you don’t have good soil, then you may need to work on this for a while, because green grass will not grow long term on bad soil, period.

First, to improve the quality of your soil, I would strongly recommend using a good organic lawn fertilizer. Organic fertilizers will help your soil several ways. First, it will increase the amount of water your soild can hold. Second, the physical structure of your soil will improve which will make it easier for air to reach down in the soil, which will then help your grass roots grow better. Finally, an organic fertilizer will also increase the bacteria and fungus in your lawn. How is that a good thing? Well, let’s just say that fungus may be bad when it’s on you, but it’s very good for the soil and for breaking down things and turning it into great grass food!

So how do organic fertilizers do this when man made chemical ones have much more ‘active’ ingredients (nitrogen, phosphorus, or potash)? Well, quantity is not the only issue at play here. You can take too many vitamins, or just take them in the wrong amounts to the point that they will not really help you. Same thing with fertilizer. No, organic fertilizer will not change your lawn green overnight, but longer term you will have a much healthier, and thus greener lawn that even requires less work and water and is better for the environment.
