Are you thinking of going skiing this winter then it is important that you make sure that you have the right equipment. Along with the appropriate clothing you need to make sure that you get yourself a good pair of ski boots. But what you may find difficult because there are so many different types of boots to choose from is knowing which ones are going to be best for you.

So before you do go out and invest quite a considerable sum of money in your ski boots it is advisable to learn a little more about them. In this article we take a look at just of the things you should know about this item of skiing equipment and which will help you to determine what pair are going to be right for you.

As mentioned above boots for skiing come in a number of different styles and are arranged as to how they will be worn. Below we take a look at the different ways in which ski boots can be worn by you.

1. Rear Entry – Of the boots we discuss in this article these ones are perfect for complete ski novices. They are very quick and simple to put on and off and the rear part of them is flexible allowing putting your foot into them easy. The buckles on these are situated at the back and this is how they gained their name. As these don’t cost too much these are perfect for those who won’t be skiing regularly. Also it is a good idea if you only intend to go skiing once to hire a pair.

2. Front Entry – If you buy a pair of these ski boots they allow you more control over your skiing as they allow you to make more precise movements. Known also as overlap boots these are what many skiers choose to wear as they allow them to be more versatile in their skiing and also help to improve their performance. But these boots rather than having the buckles at the rear have four of them at the front.

3. Mid Entry – These are the boots that offer you the benefits of the ones we have discussed previously. Not only can they easily be put on and taken off as they have buckles at the back. They are much quicker to put on because unlike the other styles they come with just 2 rather than 4 buckles as on the front entry kind. Again these allow you more versatility in your skiing movements so ensuring that your skiing can be improved.

If you are intending to go skiing regularly then it is worthwhile considering spending money on a pair of the more expensive front or mid entry ski boots. Not only will these allow you to move more easily as you ski but will help to ensure that the skills you have learnt can be improved upon. Also it is worthwhile actually trying out a number of different styles and pairs in order to determine which feel the most comfortable on.

In light of the many cheap snowboard deals rampant today, snowboards are a relatively recent innovation. Many people look back on the history of snowboarding in an attempt to discover precisely who invented the snowboard. Some people say it was Sherman Poppen with his “Snurfer” toy back in’65. Some people point to Dimitrije Milovich, who, in’71, patented a design for a snowboard that was based on modern surfboards. In fact, all of these people, and several more, contributed to the design of modern snowboards! It wasn’t all Burton, the house snowboards, Solomon snowboards or Lamar snowboards in the beginning.

Today, the snowboard has accelerated towards becoming one of the fastest growing winter sport in America. At many resorts there are more snowboarders than skiers. The great appeal of snowboarding to the younger crowd has won. In a way it is similar to skateboarding, but without the wheels.

The original Snurfer was the first modern snowboard. When his daughter’s friends all asked for one, he decided to patent and sell his Snurfer. It was well received and it was a commercial success.

While that was happening, Dimitrije Milovich was busy creating his own design for a cheap snowboard that had absolutely nothing to do with the Snurfer. Milovich was a typical college student who got bored one day during a break at his New York college. He took a cafeteria tray, stood on it, and slid down snowy hills. Upon realizing that this could be something one could market, he got together with a surfer by the name of Wayne Stovekin.

A man named Bob Webber was trying to get a patent for his “skiboard”. He got it in’72, the same year Milovich dropped out of college to move to Utah. Milovich managed to patent the “Swallowtail” design that year. In’74, Milovich began making cheap snowboards for commissions.

Snowboards were not the work of just one person. Although the modern board was first popularized huge commercial success was the Burton board, many contributed. It was a logical progression built on the insights gained by using the invention by multiples of innovators. The House snowboards now has all the top brands at up to 40% discount under one roof: Solomon snowboards, Option, Avalanche, Rossignol, Lamar snowboards, Burton and the many other brands. Modern snowboards were born of many small incremental improvements. Burton boards was the first large modern commercial success. Today, top brands can be accessed and cheap snowboards as well as snowboarding accessories on the Internet make it possible for purchases up to 40% off retail price.

In this part of our learn to ski guide we look at how to choose skis.

by Bryan Charlton

In this installment of our learn to ski guide we look at purchasing skis.

In order to make the most out of your skiing time, it is important to choose the correct pair of skis, as they are the most important piece of equipment needed for skiing. Your ability as a skier and your style of skiing both contribute a great deal to the decisions you will make about the length, shape and stiffness of your skis.

Skis are designed to support certain types of skiing, so it’s important to know what type you plan to do. You will find that most skis have been designed for powder or packed runs, because those are the most popular types of skiing. Those are the skis you should look to get if you’re a beginner. As you become more experienced, and start to ski off-piste or deep powder, you’ll need to upgrade your skis to ones that are modified for those types of terrain. Experts recommend leaving the modified skis for the more experienced skier, however, as trying to learn basic skills with them is more difficult.

When considering skis, length, shape and stiffness are important considerations. Regarding length, the shorter they are, the easier they are to turn. For this reason, most beginners start off with a pair of short skis. Once you’ve mastered the basics of skiing and are confident of your ability, then you can consider longer skis, which will allow you greater speed in many different snow conditions, but which also will be less forgiving of errors.

As for shape, skis which are narrow in the boot area are capable of making sharp, fast turns, whereas skis which are wider in this area offer more stability and will make broader turns. A ski’s level of stiffness is determined by the shape and also by the material from which it made. Longer ones are usually stiffer than short ones and are more stable at high speeds. The less stiff shorter skis offer greater maneuverability which is seen a benefit to beginners.

The last point to remember is that you shouldn’t invest in skis until you know you will use them, so go skiing a couple of times before purchasing your own skis. Even if you’re sure you’ll be a regular skier, rent before buying because they’re not a cheap investment and you’ll want to be sure that you get the right type, length, shape and stiffness for your specific needs.
