A recent LA Talk Radio Show featured Daniel Simons discussing common illusions and misperceptions with Allen Cardoza and Dr. Melody Foxx.

The thesis of the book, The Invisible Gorilla, is that we do not see or remember things as clearly as we think we do. A Professor of Psychology at Beckman Institute, University of Illinois, Simons co-authored the book with Chris Chabris. The new book describes how we all suffer from illusions of attention, memory, confidence, knowledge, causality, and consequences.

Using dozens of real-world stories and pop-culture examples backed by clever experiments, the authors illustrate how we continually get things wrong, and how we have to recognize that we only have a limited amount of mental resources available to use at any particular time.

Our minds don’t always work the way we think they do. Although, we often think we see ourselves and the world as they really are, we’re actually missing a whole lot. It’s a good thing to be less sure of yourself sometimes, noted Simons. In The Invisible Gorilla, the authors use a wide assortment of stories and counterintuitive scientific findings to illustrate our common misperceptions.

Combining the work of other researchers with their own findings, the authors talk about how flaws in our attention, perception, memory, and reasoning arise They also reveal how faulty intuitions often get us into trouble.

Although we write traffic laws and build criminal cases on the assumption that people will notice when something unusual happens right in front of them, this is a huge mistake. Simons explained, we think we experience and understand the world as it is, but time after time our perceptions prove to be inaccurate.

Numerous examples illustrate why people succumb to everyday illusions while convinced that they perceive the world rather accurately. But The Invisible Gorilla is more than a catalog of human failings because it reveals the numerous ways that we are deceived by what we think and believe.

Mark Cella Why Better Ethics Are Important

Mark Cella Why Better Ethics Are Important

Better Ethics Stem From Moral Values and a Belief System. Today’s Society is Very Complicated and Corrupt and Better Ethical Direction Will Bring Prosperity.

If ethics is the glue that holds any society together, then better ethics can only make life better for each and everyone in our society. Most Americans have a firm and honest grasp of ethics that governs the way they behave and the choices they make.

It is these ethical stances that dictate whether a community will stand firm together as one, or disintegrate due to the resulting friction brought about differing ethical positions.

Ethical values come under threat by people who are ardent for success by using unethical means. While the pressure to succeed in life can prove too much for some, that is never a good reason for one to abandon ethical values, which are the moral fabrics that keep societies and families together.

The pillars of good ethics such as responsibility, loyalty, and truthfulness assist in making right decisions regardless of the current situation or the environment that individuals may find themselves in at any given time.

Adhering to ethical behavior when faced with tough situations facilitates self-confidence, which is directly attributed to courage, a quality necessary to maintain ethical behavior.

These are qualities that successful people have in abundance and as a result are willing to overcome their fears and take risks in accordance to the principle of success. Better ethics are part of success, and for this reason it is imperative to have the pillars of good ethics be entrenched at an early age.

Mark Cella on the Foundation of Ethics

The unethical on the other hand result to such tactics as telling lies or cheating due to their fear of failing. The evening news is impregnated with examples of unethical behavior in politics, corporate America, and families.

For example, the unethical behavior of a Susan Smith led to the murder of her two children in October of 1994 when she drown them in a lake in order to revive a relationship with a local man who didn’t want a ready-made family.

The Unethical behavior of former President Bill Clinton, who had intimate relations Monica Lewinsky in the White House and then lied about it, resulted in lowering the standards of our positional presidential candidates, which may have been the direct cause of overlooking the un-convicted felon Barak Obama as a candidate for president.

Mark Cella Better Ethics Are Needed in America

Ethical behavior is a result of moral beliefs, which stem from a value system often attributed to a foundation spiritual belief or the worship of a higher power.

While a small minority of society races to eradicate any public acknowledgement of God, these same people would be replete to explain their own foundations of right and wrong absent the moral law of the Bible.

Better ethics stem from a sense of right and wrong, good and bad, moral and immoral, which all come from a source, and in America, the source is the Bible. Even the laws of America were established in lock step with the principles of the Bible.

In Washington D. C. you can see a monument of Abraham Lincoln, a true man of freedom who reverberates a sense of right and wrong, an ethical man who said in regards to the Bible:

“In regard to this Great Book, I have but to say, it is the best gift God has given to man. All the good the Savior gave to the world was communicated through this book.”

-	The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln edited by Roy P. Basler, Volume VII, “Reply to Loyal Colored People of Baltimore upon Presentation of a Bible” (September 7, 1864), p. 542.
-

Mark Cella Why Better Ethics Are Important

What better ethics is there than to do good to one another in society? But today in America ethics are under attack.

While military’s can protect a nation, and Congress can control the governing of a people, without ethics and ethical behavior a nation is defeated and lost, imprisoned and enslaved, and oppression reins supreme.

Therefore let those who are unethical fail in their pursuits and those who are ethical richly succeed.

But most importantly, let us never forget where the foundations of our ethical behavior stems from, and let us display courage to acknowledge truth, never forgetting that freedom is the result of better ethics from courageous men.

Speed dating is a situation where different people gather in a speed-dating place in order to seek out for someone who will match their interest. This type of dating involves a quick meeting with large number of people for the sole purpose of looking for a soul mate.

Speed dating is an avenue of men and women sitting at tables where a man and a woman will sit at each table for a limited period of time like two minutes or three minutes depending on the type of speed dating attended.

The man and the woman are supposed to ask each other some few questions during these few minutes of speed dating meeting. This will give them the chance of having a brief overview of each other and to see if they should decide to fix another appointment to meet and discourse in more details about each other.

When the time is up then the women or the men will move to the next table and talk to another person.

After each of the men and women have met and chat with each other during the speed dating they will give the numbers of those people they are interested in. The two couples once they are mutually interested in each other will be given the opportunity to go out together and communicate.

If the two couples find out that they are compatible with each other right away from the table during process of speed dating they may exchange their data from there.

Speed dating is not for everyone but some people really like meeting new people and finding a date this way. Many people like this method because they get to meet the people in person and talk with them rather than On-line or by going on a blind date.

It is said that if there is chemistry between the two people then it is immediately recognized during a speed dating session.

Okay, bad example and I apologize to everyone reading this after getting dreadful dreams about me in that state of drunken state of unconsciousness.

When it is time to rest after a hard day’s labor it might take a little coffee or probably a few rounds of alcoholic drink or any other booze you could get your hands on. Okay, yeah I’m to be blamed for that one also, unless I’m caught dead wearing a lampshade over my head after a few rounds of vodka… half-naked! Okay, bad example and I apologize to everyone reading this after getting dreadful dreams about me in that state of drunken state of unconsciousness.

Please, Just don’t ask about that experience.

What really interested me is that I wonder how people go through the usual part of life when faced with vein-popping anxiety. Try to understand me, the new age thing like Zen or yoga is one of the good things and it actually works. Is there room for the intellectual side of people who can actually smell the roses-in-a-can while on the move? It kind of had me thinking that there really must be a simple and effective solution to this nagging problem.

The best drug there is at whatever time and whatever place you are is indeed comedy about the funny side of life. What I mean is that anyone can pay good money to listen to a comedian just to make you wet your pants after laughing so hard. Regardless of what’s been happening, and to those who has gone though the ordeal, it’s better to just laugh while facing the troubles with a clear mind than anger with a clouded vision.

One of my favorite celebrities of all time may have to be Woody Allen. Now this is one guy who gives you the in-your-face bluntness that he pulls out with gusto, even without even trying. You can talk just about anything with a man, and he’s bound to mock the subject and you’ll end up laughing rather than being upset about it.

Read what Woody Allen has to say:

1. “Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons.” It sounds good to me, I mean the practicality of all things does involve money but it doesn’t have to take an arm and a leg to get it.

2. “I believe there is something out there watching us. Unfortunately, it’s the government.” He thought.

Please, to follow me in the remaining part of the article, search for the title with the number (2) instead of (1). Be wise.

3. "There are worse things in life than death. Have you ever spent an evening with an insurance salesman?" This happens to be one of the classic ones. I mean the issue about life's little problems isn't all that bad, until 'he' shows up.

3. “There are worse things in life than death. Have you ever spent an evening with an insurance salesman?” This happens to be one of the classic ones. I mean the issue about life’s little problems isn’t all that bad, until ‘he’ shows up.

Certainly, relationships can get complicated, or does have its complications that probably any author about relationships is bound to discover it soon. We follow what our heart desires, unless you’re talking about the heart as in the heart that pump blood throughout your body.

4. “Love is the answer, but while you’re waiting for the answer, sex raises some pretty interesting questions.” And if you want more, just keep on inquiring!

5. “A fast word about oral contraception. I asked a girl to go to bed with me, she said ‘no’.” It sounds, ‘sensible’, I assume.

And when it comes to everyday life, he really knows how to make the best out of every possible scenario, and it doesn’t involve a lawsuit if he strikes a nerve.

6. “Basically my wife was immature. I’d be at home in the bath and she’d come in and sink my boats.” I never had a boat in my bathtub before. Just staring at it while soaking in hot water makes me seasick already.

7. “I am not afraid of death, I just don’t want to be there when it happens.” If it rains, it pours.

8. “I am thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose.” It could get worse when you’re guzzling on beer… or mouthwash, and it happened to me once!

9. “If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.” At least he doesn’t smite us with lightning, and I’m thankful for that.

And despite of what may happen to all of us in the next ten, twenty, or even thirty years, I guess we all have to see things in a different kind of light and not just perspective. I can’t seem to imagine life without any piece of wisdom that could guide us. Whether we’re religious or not, it takes more courage to accept your fears and learn how to deal with them is all that matters when it comes to even just getting along.

And to sum things up, here is the last nugget of wisdom to go by… at any condition, at any time, and at any place we may be.

10. “The gift for being happy is appreciating and fondness of what you have, instead of what you don’t have.”

Goodbye!

Dutch dating means a form of dating whereby each person will pay for himself or herself when they go out on a date. This method of dating is often the best when both parties are new to each other, independent, or just friends.

Many people often like to go Dutch because they are not comfortable with someone else paying for them. This is common with women who are liberal or independent in their thinking.

We also often find people practicing Dutch dating when the dating expenses are too high for one party to bear. They will both share the expenses of the dinner and any other activities chosen to do on the date.

The two parties may also have an appointment to meet at a venue. Each individual therefore bear the transportation fare to the place.

An important advantage of Dutch dating is that it is informal and therefore provides a very calm environment that many people prefer when starting dating.

Some men and women are not just naturally comfortable with someone else paying for anything for them until they are well conversant with them better. More so paying for them makes them feel they owe the other party anything.

Some people practice Dutch dating in order to absolve them of any feeling of obligation towards the second person. Most women also practice Dutch dating due to their understanding of the expenses connected with dating and don’t suppose it is fair that they guy should pay for everything most especially when their expenditure at the restaurant is very costly they still have to buy additional things from the eating place.

Dutch dating is common for people who are not comfortable with someone else spending money on them. This is just natural for some people to be more contented when they bear the cost of their own spending rather than someone bearing it for them.

There are a lot of open-minded and independent women who are very proud who prefer to pay their own way also. If you date such you better go Dutch dating. This creates a comfortable atmosphere because no one feels like they owe him or her for anything later.

Most people approach retirement with a gloomy countenance. They accept retirement as if it is a surrender to the hands of fate and the decay of the body. So, it is very important to help the retiree understand that retirement is something to be accepted because it is an inevitable stage in life. But how can you achieve that? Its not so difficult: just poke fun at retirement. Retirement jokes, like the ones made in speeches are popular. However, speeches tend make people emotional to the point where everyone in the room is in a state of gloomy inevitability and sympathy. But one can raise the level of the atmosphere with retirement jokes (without insulting the retiree, of course).

Examples: In addition to talking about the wonderful moments the speaker has shared with the retiree, he/she can add something that will lighten up the atmosphere. One could give a tombstone slab, which has the inscription in advance on it. If you’re a friend, you could also make a joke by calling the retiree grandfather whenever the retiree speaks to you, as in “OK, grandfather”. This can also help lighten the mood. But dont overdo it, of course.

Another gag that might help is a wig in strong colour like pink, green or purple. A follow up gag to that joke might be that he might require a wig in the very near future. If he declines it, say: Okay, then wear a paper bag instead when you do go bald. Always be prepared for when a joke falls flat. So keep those backup jokes ready! Believe it or not, some agencies write and sell personalized retirement speeches with witty jokes written in after knowing the personality and interests of the retiree. These companies usually add jokes about the retirees profession. If one cannot find enough retirement jokes, a visit to a bookstore can help a lot.

There are joke books that cover a wide range of topics, only one of which is retirement. A little search on this or that will help inspire the reader if he/she isnt a natural comedian. These may also be good retirement gifts as well, helping the retiree have a good laugh on one of those boring Monday afternoons. There are also a lot of websites on the net that provide a lot of jokes and free retirement e-books. The e-books that are available range from the 150 Best Things Said about Retirement to Retirement Wisdoms You Wont Get from your Trust Managerr.

Conclusion: One has a lot of leeway when one is telling jokes at a retirement party. If you know someone who is coming near to retirement, you can first send an email or two which has retirement quotes like retirement is when everyday is Saturday and retirement: goodbye tension, hello pension!. It is a nice gesture and gives the sense that you know what the future retiree is going through.

Again, keep the retiree (future or not) at ease as much as you can. Make him/her think about retirement with a smile and not with a sigh as much as you can. And when the retirement party does come, keep the same light-hearted approach, telling jokes here and there and doing some gags like the ones said above. Not only will the retiree feel less wary about retirement, he/she will focus more on the people who made him happy on that bitter-sweet day, especially the person that presented him with that strange pink wig.

If you or anyone you know is approaching Retirement, just go along to our web site at Retirement Don’t reprint this exact article.

For centuries, scientists have engaged in research that has increased our understanding of nature and how natural forces work to create and sustain the world and universe we see today. The purpose of science is to follow a process of making careful and unbiased observations in order to generate knowledge about the world through tested theories based on the scientific observations. Although theories may not guarantee the absolute truth about a particular scientific theory, the idea is to get as close to an accurate approximation of the truth. The result will lead to a more accurate and credible understanding of how the natural world works.

Scientists seek to learn as much as possible about the nature of the world. By using intellect, the aid of scientific study devices, and formulated scientific hypothesis, scientists now have a better understanding of nature. For instance, the principles of motion and the law of gravity are applicable when studying other parts of the universe, even if we have yet to travel to these areas. The same principles can be applied to other forces such as seeking to understand ocean tides, bird migrations, earthquakes, and hurricanes. Scientists study patterns both in the natural world and in laboratories using technologically advanced research devices to gather data, take measurements, and make their observations and create their scientific theories. The result is an improved understanding of nature.

Science also helps us understand how we evolved. By studying such elements as fossils of species that once roamed the earth millions of years ago, various rocks and other matter located deep within the earth, skeletal remains of dinosaurs, and the remains of prehistoric man and early primates, scientists have made many significant discoveries about how we evolved. In fact, such famous scientists as Stephen Hawking, Carl Sagan, Albert Einstein, and Charles Darwin, have all contributed important theories and data that have brought us even closer to understanding how the universe emerged and developed.

How science has reconstructed the events in the history of the planet and its life forms have led to remarkable improvements and insight into how nature works. For instance, by studying the contours of the ocean floors, the shape of continents, the effects of a volcano eruption and earthquake, and where different fossils have been found, we get a better understanding of why our continents reside where they are and how human populations and species migrated and evolved to what we see today. We also get a better understanding of the results of the ice age and the effect it had on the types of species we have today. Understanding how the world evolved and the changes that took place also helps us to better understand current world problems such as the effects of Global Warming which is essential to finding ways to slow it down. By understanding how nature and its natural forces work, we are better able to come up with ways to manage the planet and its inhabitants.

Because science relies heavily on accurate and unbiased data, there is a constant development of advanced techniques and instruments which has lead to many astounding discoveries in the world and universe. For instance, the Hubble Telescope has resulted in many astounding discoveries about the stars, planets, black holes, and even far away galaxies. With advanced computer systems and other technologically advanced instrument, the future for scientific discovery looks bright concerning our understanding of the history of the universe and the history of life on earth.

It will be interesting to follow the progression of nature and science in the years ahead. physics research will also be developed and integrated into even more systems that we use in everyday life.

Lots of people are learning some things about geographic information systems these days. One of the first things they are learning, is just what one is. A GIS as they are referred to, helps us to question, interpret, understand, and visualize data that can show us patterns or trends, or relationships by way of report, globes, charts, and maps.

The main way that GIS is used is through maps. But this is only one way that it can be taken advantage of. A GIS can be used in various ways, and can put out other products as well for the use of geographic data. They assist in problem solving in mapping programs and contribute data to many online mapping tools.

When you have a database that is full of information in relation to geography, then you have what is known as a geodatabase. This is a database in the geographic information systems that will interpret the world for you by putting it into geographic terms. It can lay out streets and addresses from an aerial point of view, enabling you to accurately see how the geography of that area lays out.

A GIS can be used along with a GPS in order to answer questions specifically about a certain location. You can use the data that is available for making analysis and accurately understand about the location in question. The GIS basically takes the information and can geoprocess it so that it can be used along with existing database information.

You may wonder who would have need of a GIS. Well, businesses can make good use of a GIS system. They can be used to analyze and more accurately calculate an ROI, or return on investment. This function is used by quite a few in the business world, like governments, academic institutions, agencies, or corporations and companies. The GIS can provide these types of businesses with a lot of helpful benefits.

With GIS you can see where there are quantities of things for finding relationships between different places. It is an added bit of information that can be useful in making decisions about how your business or organization will treat those places in regard to a project you may have in that region or area. It can map specific activities in various locations and present the data for it in a map form, even though the data is about a census.

This technology can be used to look at earthquake activity or other types of weather. If you can map things out and see how they look over a period of time, then you can get some insight into their behavior. Like with hurricanes. This gives you an idea of where and when the next ones are most likely to occur. This allows you to prepare for and anticipate possible future events. That can be very powerful, and very beneficial information.

Learning some things about geographic information systems, will help you to understand how lots of businesses are able to project future happenings and trends. It is an easier way of looking at data and being able to see just what it means in relation to the question at hand. It basically is an information converter, that puts data into a form that is then easily interpreted in a visual way. It has tremendous benefit for many situations and in answering important questions.

Canada’s top science authority offers vast knowledge on a variety of Canadian research topics, including mathematics research, engineering Canada, and physics research.
