The Ins and Outs of Sinus Surgery

If you were born with a nose that is too flat or too wide, or big or small, its not your fault. It only becomes our fault when we don’t want to do anything about a nose that bothers us given the wide variety of ways to enhance our appearance. Cosmetic dermatology has seen dramatic improvements in terms of affordable safe sinus surgery procedures.

In sinus surgery, the bone and the skin of the nose are reformed in order to be more proportional to the features of the face. The intensity of the operation depends on how big the changes are that need to be made. Sinus surgeons are trained on how to evaluate facial features and make the nose look more harmonious to the other parts of the face.

The question is, what actually happens during the procedure?

Sinus surgery, similar to other forms of surgery, begins with receiving anesthesia. Sinus surgery can either use general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. In intravenous sedation, only some parts of the body (in this case parts of the face) are administered with the drug. In general anesthesia however the entire body is sedated. Sinus surgeons always rely on the patient’s health condition in deciding which type of anesthesia to use.

Following anesthesia, the surgeon will begin to open up the target area by cutting the skin along carefully pre-determined lines. In your typical sinus surgery, only the skin on the inside of the nose will be cut leaving no visible scars following the healing period. Generally, a surgeon will do just about everything he can to avoid having to cut the skin in a visible area.

Following the surgeon’s skillful cuts, the reshaping of the nose begins. The intensity of this step depends on the specific sinus surgery to be performed. Nose reshaping may involve breaking the nose in order to achieve the desired outcome, or may just require the surgeon to pull the skin and cartilage in a certain way. Often this step requires special tools to insert into the incisions to scrape and remove parts of a dorsal hump on a nose. This is by far the most time consuming and sensitive part of the entire operation.

Once the nose has reached the desired shape, the surgeon cleans up the wounds, sutures any open incisions, and dresses the reshaped nose with surgical bandages. The sinus surgery is now complete and all that is left is for the healing process to begin.
