When CPE Becomes Absolutely Necessary

Most professional organizations and licensing boards require professionals to take some sort of continuing professional education (CPE) in order to keep their certifications and licenses. The exact number of hours that are required depend on the organization and the state where you live. In the case of certified public accountants, or CPAs, a certain number of hours of CPE must consist of ethics CPE courses.

There are a lot of different companies that provide ethics CPE courses. Some of these providers include Cpethink.com, Gleim Publications, SmartPros Ltd., Accountants Education Group, Beacon Hill Financial Education, Professional Education Services, Western CPE, Positive Systems, Inc./PASSOnline, UltimateCPE, Bisk Education, and Financial Education Resources.

The requirements for CPE for CPAs vary based on the state where they live and practice. Usually these range from between 40 hours to 80 hours, and require some amount, often between 2 and 8 hours, of ethics CPE courses to be a part of this total. The rest of the CPE hours can be earned through taking courses in a number of other topics.

Just how do accountants find ethics CPE courses that meet the requirements of their states? Well, there are a number of different options available. The internet is a great resource for this. Websites for state CPA associations usually list courses that meet the requirement, or give you websites that you can go to in order to find these courses.

Within each of these categories there are different courses available. Even if you don’t live in a city, you still have a wide variety of CPE and ethics CPE courses that you can choose from since many are offered in various formats, including over the internet.

If you can’t make one of the in person classes, you just need to choose from the options that you can take in your own home, either through self study or over the internet. Most of these options require you to pass a short quiz afterwards to show that you have truly studied the material and understood the contents. Many in person ethics CPE and other CPE courses do not require any sort of test, just your presence during the course.
