When It Comes To Installing Roller Shades
As a form of window shades, roller shades can add a large dose of style and taste to just about any window that is in need of a blind. Knowing how to install roller shades, then, can come in handy when the time has come to treat a window — no matter the room in the house — by installing one of several different types of roller shade into the window to not only block light but add style.
Usually, these versatile shapes are divided into three specific types, a suntier, a laminated roller and a suntone. The suntone is the cheapest of the three and is predominantly made of vinyl. The suntier is a good midrange model and the laminated roller is a high-end shade that is usually custom-made and made of vinyl and cotton fabric joined together through lamination.
At any rate, when it comes to installing any of these shades — which all share certain similar installation requirements — there will be several different tools that will be needed before installation can be done. Gather a tape measure and a pencil along with Philips head and flat head screwdriver, a quarter inch hex head and a carpenter’s level. All will be used at one point or another.
Once all the tools have been gathered take a few moments to go over the hardware that was supplied with the window shade and begin to piece it together in order to get an idea of how it will be mounted. Commonly, parts usually include mounting brackets, clutch mechanisms, decorative pull cords and shade fabric. It is worth noting that not every shade will require all of the parts listed.
Keep in mind that the screws that have been provided for the mounting brackets may not be appropriate for the material that the frame is composed of. For instance, if it’s a metal frame you’re going to need sheet metal screws and if it’s made of some sort of stone or concrete you’ll need to use a carbide drill in order to make the mounting holes. Additionally, you’ll need an anchor kit.
The first thing you’ll need to do is determine if you are going to mount a shade inside the frame (called the inside mount method) or outside (outside mount method). When mounting inside the frame, make sure that the roller shade does not come into contact with the top of the window frame. Make sure you position the mounting brackets inside the frame and use your level to make sure they are evenly mounted.
For an outside mount, take care to ensure that the shade doesn’t come into contact with the top of the frame when the shade is raised or lowered. Go over a mounting carefully and make sure that the brackets have been installed and then are properly aligned and level with each other. If everything’s been done properly, everything will move freely. Allow for an eighth of an inch between the brackets.
Once the mounting hardware has been installed the only thing that will be left to do is to install the shades themselves. Make sure to go over the instructions for the shades and follow them closely, taking care to avoid over-tightening the rollers when attaching the clutch mechanisms and then mounting everything into the brackets. The window shades can quickly bring some style to just about any window.
