Why Female Tennis Should be Revered
Really, why are things this way?
When Steffi Graf ruled the tennis world the media didn’t appreciate it. When Venus and Serena had been squashing any person on her way to the championship, fans didn’t enjoy it. And now when things are wide open to a bigger field? People do not appreciate this.
Most admit that the Williams sisters stand above and outside the rest the majority of the time. However body defects and abridged non-Slam tournament schedules imply they currently meet in the draw prior to the title match. Although for a second time let us keep in mind that not too long ago the previously referenced gripes concerning this common matchup in the final round and their governance over other athletes.
So now we have Dinara Safina at the number place in the WTA race and the US Open seeds. And what do people indicate? She has not earned it because she hasn’t won a Grand Slam (and she has been the loser in a few slam title recently.) However she’s making slam title and she is pretty amusing along the way, in the tennis world and in her personal life.
Yesterday she had to fight it out for a second time, becoming the 1st top seed to lose in the first round. Was this engaging? I thought so. Although we’ll hear all regarding the illegitimacy of the ranking structure, and the rest of that junk.
And then there was Venus Williams last night–also pushed to three sets. Also compelling. (Also note that Venus did not have the winningest of summers post Wimbledon.) However probably to be heard is the prevalence of injuries among the sisters Williams and their “distractions” off the courts.
Plus currently Kim Clijsters is back and rather than being wicked enthralled – which one must be since she’s affable and pleasant and a first-class competitor – the media are all like “okay what does this indicate regarding the ladies game that she might come back and have a 6-2 finish for the summer year?”
Well I suppose it proclaims that she – like she consistently has -maintains her physical state especially well. Also that she is a seasoned player and she has very nearly zero to lose.
So let’s just end all the criticism, please. Agreed, there are problems in the women’s game. (For example the lack of variety in terms of playing style.) Although I personally like that it is anyone’s guess as to who will end up in that finals in less than two weeks. And I anticipate seeing how they end up there.
