Wide Receivers Get the Love This NFL Season
My fantasy football draft strategy was different this year than in years past, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Have a read about it here and let me know what you think.
First, I drastically reduced the amount of studying I did. For the past few years I poured over every stat that I could and read the Pro Football Prospectus front to back (have you ever seen the size of that thing). I sure knew my fantasy football – which works great for talking to you guys – but talk about paralysis by analysis.
As a result, I decided this season to only casually research the options. Enough to know who’s injured and some rookie sleepers and what not, but not like in years past. I think this strategy of over-analyzing backfired for sure.
Second, I did some reverse draft strategy this year for the 19th season of one of my two leagues. In other words I do not subscribe to the “must have a running back in the first two rounds” strategy.
Running backs have been disappointing the last few years and many have decided to either draft two wide receivers at the start, or to go with a wide out and a quarterback. I decided that I would reach for a top wide receiver and a top quarterback with my first two picks.
So, my goal going into my draft was I wanted two top ten QB’s (as I said we start two) and two top ten WR (we start 3) before taking a RB. Here’s how the entire draft turned out. See if you think I have a team that can compete.
Anyway, I decided to take Tom Brady with my first pick (at #5), and then I took Andre Johnson, who led the league in receiving yards last year, on the way back. I wanted another top receiver from here, and Greg Jennings fit the bill in the third round. Next, I chose Matt Schaub at QB in the 4th round of the draft.
Then it was time for the running backs. And I can’t say I’m disappointed. Ronnie Brown and Pierre Thomas were both still available with my next two picks, and both of these guys have top 10 potential. I think my strategy will pay off.
